Intel Addresses Raptor lake Instability with Microcode Update
Updated june 01, 2025
Intel is rolling out microcode 0x129, its first attempt to resolve elevated voltage issues affecting desktop Raptor Lake processors. This update addresses concerns about processor degradation that have surfaced over the past year. The new microcode aims to cap voltages and prevent further damage to 13th and 14th generation Core chips.
The company identified an “elevated operating voltage” problem in high-TDP desktop Raptor Lake chips. The 0x129 microcode update caps the voltage of affected chips at 1.55V, which Intel considers within specification. This voltage limit should prevent future chip damage.
Intel is still investigating whether it can improve the stability of processors already affected by degradation. The company is treating this microcode as a beta fix and will not distribute it thru operating system updates initially. Intel is working toward a broader release.
According to Intel, chips that have degraded due to repeated voltage spikes now require a higher minimum voltage (Vmin) to operate. this “Vmin shift” is Intel’s next investigative target, with updates expected by the end of August.
Motherboard partners, including ASUS and MSI, have already released beta BIOSes containing the new microcode. Users should treat these BIOSes with caution due to their beta status.
Intel is currently distributing to its OEM/ODM partners a new microcode patch (0x129) for its Intel Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors which will address incorrect voltage requests to the processor that are causing elevated operating voltage.
The 0x129 microcode is currently distributed only through BIOS updates, not operating system updates. A timeline for OS updates is not yet available.
Performance Impact
Intel’s internal testing indicates that the new microcode generally has no significant performance impact. Though, some workloads, such as PugetBench GPU Effects Score and Hitman 3: Dartmoor, may experience performance regressions. Other common benchmarks and major games show no performance losses.
what’s next
Intel plans to continue investigating mitigations for scenarios that can result in Vmin shift on potentially impacted Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors and will provide updates by the end of august.
