Rare Cancer Discovered After Alcohol-Induced Pain in Young Person

A rare symptom involving pain triggered by alcohol consumption has led to the diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma in young patients, highlighting how uncommon physical reactions can serve as critical indicators for blood cancer.

Claire Dougherty, a 22-year-old medical assistant, began experiencing a sharp, roaring pain extending from the base of her neck to her inner ear in August 2025. The pain occurred every time she consumed alcohol, regardless of the type of beverage, including vodka, gin, and wine.

By September 2025, Dougherty discovered a lump in her throat. Following a CT scan and biopsy, doctors found a tumor on her trachea. In November 2025, she was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma.

The Mechanism of Alcohol-Induced Pain

The pain Dougherty experienced was located in lymph nodes that had already swollen due to the cancer. These affected nodes reacted to the alcohol, causing inflammation in the surrounding area.

While uncommon, alcohol-induced pain is recognized as a classic symptom of Hodgkin lymphoma. The inflammation caused by alcohol can lead to pressure on surrounding tissues, resulting in significant discomfort.

Dougherty underwent six rounds of chemotherapy by February 2026, which resulted in the shrinkage of the tumor pressing on her airway. Her treatment plan continues with 20 rounds of radiation.

Other Presentations of Hodgkin Lymphoma

Hodgkin lymphoma can present through various unusual symptoms beyond alcohol-induced pain. Other recognized presentations include:

• Intractable itching, which may necessitate a chest X-ray to rule out a mass.
• Persistent raised eosinophils.
• Autoimmune conditions, such as vasculitis, encephalitis, or immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).
• Nephrotic syndrome, specifically minimal change glomerulonephritis.

Similar patterns have been observed in other patients. Hollie Thursby, a 28-year-old mother from the U.K., experienced pain in the side of her neck after drinking a glass or two of wine. Thursby also reported unbearable itchy skin and extreme exhaustion.

In July 2025, Thursby discovered a hard, non-mobile lump on the side of her neck. She was subsequently diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma and began chemotherapy.

Trends in Young Adult Cancer Diagnoses

Medical professionals are noting an increase in young adults presenting with cancer diagnoses that were previously associated with older populations. For example, colorectal cancer has become the leading cause of cancer deaths among adults under 50 in the United States.

The cases of Dougherty and Thursby underscore the importance of investigating unusual physical symptoms, even when they appear transient or linked to specific triggers like alcohol, to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.
