Rare Felicia for Sale: Only a Few Dozens Exist, High Price

Rare Felicia for Sale: Only a Few Dozens Exist, High Price

March 16, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Business

Among the rare⁢ variants of the Škoda Felicia are the utility versions or ‌the peculiar
⁣ “lifestyle pick-up” Fun, of which 4,216 were produced. However, the rarest version
comprises only a few dozen examples.
‌

This is the Škoda ⁤Felicia, sold by the Czech company Metalex as MTX Cabrio 7-16.⁣ The
designation suggests that this ⁢car offered the possibility of driving with the open sky
above. The standard Felicia was, of course, offered – in addition‍ to utility
‌ specialties – as‌ a five-door hatchback‌ and a more practical estate.

‍The open-top Felicia did not appear out of nowhere. From 1991 to 1996, Metalex offered
the‌ MTX Roadster (MTX 7-06), a convertible derived from the Škoda favorit. Around 200
vehicles were built.

‌ ⁢ So, when the Felicia, the successor to the Favorit, appeared, it was logical‍ that
⁢ Metalex would soon start working on it as well. Pavel Škarka took care of ⁢the ‌car’s
‍ ⁢ design, while⁤ Ivan‌ Solfronk handled the structural solutions.

The biggest structural difference compared to ‍the MTX Roadster is visible at‍ first
⁣ ‍ glance. While the convertible derived from the Favorit had only one pair of doors, in
the⁣ case of the ⁢MTX Cabrio, the creators retained two pairs of doors. Therefore, the
⁤ interior retained two rows of ⁤seats.

further modifications included the installation of additional‌ reinforcements to ⁣the floor
‌ ⁣section and the installation of⁢ a protective arch between⁣ the seats. These modifications
⁣ were, of course, intended to improve the stiffness ⁢of the body, which suffered from the
removal of the roof and pillars.

The new ⁤roof was canvas and ⁣consisted of three ⁤layers. It ⁤was manually operated, and when
⁣ folded, the roof was stored behind the rear seats. This solution naturally required
‍ meaningful changes ‌to the rear‌ – including a new laminate boot lid. Note‍ also how the
space ⁣for the roof extends above the rear doors.

However, the space for the roof also affected the seating in the ⁣back. The three-seater
bench became a “spot” for two ⁤passengers, who‌ also had ‍to sit with their backs against
the backrests at almost right‌ angles. Therefore, these were more of an emergency seating.
 ⁣

‍Metalex did not‍ interfere with the powertrain; the convertible⁤ was available with the
same engines as the standard felicia -‌ except for ‍the diesel.‌ The price‍ started at around
⁤ half a‍ million Czech crowns.
⁤

Perhaps this is why the MTX Cabrio ‍did⁤ not become ‌a hit; only⁤ around ‍30 units were
⁤ produced between⁤ 1997 and ⁣2000.The specific figure varies depending on the source, but
⁢ it is⁣ indeed assumed that ‌no⁣ more than 40 ⁣cars ⁤were built.

‌ ⁢ We do not know how many⁢ of them have survived‍ to the present day,but it ⁣certainly ⁣will
not be many. Therefore, we were interested to find one example for sale in‍ a Czech
‌ advertisement. The twenty-seventh piece from 1999 is being sold by the well-known Cabrio
‍ Gallery museum.

The car is said to‍ be in entirely original condition and has the original paint. The
powertrain is ⁣a 1300cc engine with an output of⁤ 50 kW (68 hp), and the mileage is‍ about
‌ 29,000 kilometers. The rare MTX Cabrio is available for ‌799,000 CZK.

The Škoda Felicia is a familiar sight, but have you ever heard of the MTX Cabrio version? This ‍rare convertible, produced by the Czech⁢ company Metalex,is a unique take on the popular Felicia. Here’s everything you need to know about this interesting vehicle.

What is the MTX Cabrio?

The MTX Cabrio, also known as the MTX Cabrio 7-16,⁤ is a convertible version⁣ of the Škoda Felicia. It was produced by Metalex, a Czech company, from 1997 to 2000. It’s substantially rarer than the standard Felicia models, including the “lifestyle pick-up” Fun.

How rare is the MTX Cabrio?

The MTX Cabrio is⁢ quite rare. While exact production ⁣numbers ⁤vary depending on the source,it’s ⁣estimated that only around 30-40 units were ever made. This makes ‍it a sought-after vehicle for collectors.

What were the design features of the MTX Cabrio?

Four doors: Unlike its predecessor, the MTX ⁤Roadster (based on the ⁣Škoda Favorit), the MTX Cabrio retained two pairs ‍of doors and two rows of seats.

Convertible top: It featured a manually operated, three-layer canvas roof‌ that folded down behind the rear‍ seats.

Modified rear: The design included a new laminate boot lid to accommodate the folded roof. This also meant changes to the rear seating.

Reinforced body: Additional reinforcements were added to the floor section, along with a protective arch between⁤ the seats, to compensate for the loss⁤ of rigidity from removing the ‌roof and pillars.

Who designed the MTX Cabrio?

Pavel Škarka was responsible for⁣ the car’s design, while Ivan Solfronk handled the structural solutions.

How was the rear seating affected by the convertible design?

The space needed to store the folded roof impacted the⁤ rear seating. The original three-seater bench was replaced with a space for two passengers, positioned with their backs nearly upright against the backrests, making it more suitable for short trips.

What engines were available for the MTX Cabrio?

Metalex⁢ used the same engines‌ as the standard Škoda Felicia, excluding the diesel ⁣option.According to Automobile-Catalog.com, these included 1.3L and 1.6L petrol engines:

1.3L: 1289 cc, producing around 50 ⁤kW (68 PS / 67 hp).

1.6L: 1598 cc, producing around 55 kW (75 ⁢PS / 74 hp).

Why was the‍ MTX Cabrio not a⁣ commercial success?

Several factors likely contributed ‌to the MTX Cabrio’s limited production:

Price: The starting price of around half a million⁢ Czech ‍crowns was ample.

Practicality: The ⁤compromised rear seating ⁤and manually ‍operated roof may have deterred some buyers.

Niche appeal: Convertibles, in general, have a more limited market compared to standard hatchbacks and estates.

What is the MTX Roadster (MTX 7-06)?

The MTX⁤ roadster (MTX 7-06) was a convertible produced by Metalex based on the Škoda Favorit. Around 200 ⁤of these vehicles were manufactured between 1991 and 1996, serving as a predecessor to the MTX cabrio. It featured ⁤only one ⁢pair of doors unlike the Felicia-based MTX Cabrio.

What modifications ‌where made for safety?

To improve body stiffness after ⁣removing the roof, Metalex added:

Floor ‌section reinforcements

⁣A protective arch between the⁢ seats
