Manchester United’s 3-0 Victory Over Southampton: Ten Haag’s ‘Ketchup Theory’ and Rashford’s First Goal
Manchester United secured a 3-0 win against Southampton in the 4th round of the English Premier League 2024-25, held at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, England.
Transfer student Matthijs de Ligt scored his first goal, and Alejandro Garnacho scored his first league goal. However, the highlight of the match was Marcus Rashford’s first goal of the season.

Manchester United manager Eric ten Haag praised Rashford’s goal, stating, “Rashford’s first goal is very important. We also had a chat before the game. It means a lot to him. Every striker would want to score at the start of the season. Rashford has now scored his first goal. I’m sure we’ll score more goals.”
Ten Haag also mentioned the ‘ketchup theory,’ which suggests that once a striker scores their first goal, more goals will follow. This theory was first mentioned by Cristiano Ronaldo, who said, “Goals are like ketchup. No matter how much I shake it, it won’t come out, but when the time comes, it will explode all at once.”

Ronaldo recently criticized Ten Haag, stating that he should not say that Manchester United cannot compete to win the Premier League and the Champions League every year. Ronaldo also suggested that Ten Haag should listen to Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who knows Manchester United.
Ten Haag responded to Ronaldo’s criticism, saying, ”Everyone can express their opinion. However, Ronaldo is far away in Saudi Arabia. Outside noise doesn’t affect me.”
