Ravens Sign Veteran DB Desmond King to Practice Squad for Added Secondary Depth

Ravens Sign Veteran DB Desmond King to Practice Squad for Added Secondary Depth

November 19, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

The Ravens have signed Desmond King, a veteran defensive back, to their practice squad. King, who is 29 years old, was let go by the Houston Texans last week. This marks his ninth season in the NFL. He was a first-team All-Pro in 2018 while playing for the Los Angeles Chargers.

This season, King has played in just one game. Last season, he participated in seven games with the Texans after being released mid-season by the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played three games.

King has shown versatility and skill throughout his career. He has nine career interceptions, 9.5 sacks, and 35 passes defensed. Initially, King played mainly as a nickel cornerback but spent more time in outside cornerback roles during the last two seasons in Houston. The Texans moved him back to nickel cornerback last year.

King will provide the Ravens with added depth in the secondary, especially at nickel cornerback. Arthur Maulet is currently sidelined due to a calf injury. Head Coach John Harbaugh stated that Maulet is unlikely to go on injured reserve, and they will monitor his recovery.

What impact ‍does Desmond King’s signing have on the Ravens’ defensive lineup?

Exclusive Interview with NFL Analyst on Ravens’ Signing of⁤ Desmond King

By NewsDirectory3.com⁤ Staff Writer

In a notable move to bolster‍ their secondary, the Baltimore ‍Ravens have signed veteran defensive back Desmond⁣ King to their practice squad. To gain deeper insights into this signing and its implications, we spoke with ‌NFL analyst and former defensive back specialist, Jamie Collins.

NewsDirectory3: Jamie, ⁣the Ravens recently signed Desmond King after he was released⁤ by the Texans. How significant‌ is this addition for Baltimore’s defense?

Jamie Collins: ⁣Signing Desmond King is a⁤ strategic move for ⁤the Ravens, especially considering the ⁣current injury to Arthur ‌Maulet. King brings a ‌wealth of experience and versatility to the secondary. He’s played primarily as a nickel cornerback, ⁤where he’s effective in coverage ‍and can‌ also contribute in run support. With Maulet out, King‍ offers immediate depth and the potential⁤ to step into a starting role ‌if needed.

NewsDirectory3: ⁢King has had a varied career, including being a first-team All-Pro in 2018. How does his past performance influence a team like the Ravens?

Jamie Collins: Absolutely, King’s All-Pro recognition speaks volumes about his talent. ⁢His ability to make plays‌ is demonstrated by his nine ⁣career interceptions and 35 passes defensed. While his recent seasons have been inconsistent, his experience with both outside and nickel positions allows ⁤the Ravens‍ to utilize him in‌ a way that maximizes his‌ skills. With a solid defensive⁤ scheme under Coach Harbaugh, King could find himself in a role that reignites his performance⁢ levels.

NewsDirectory3: Given King has played⁣ in just one game‍ this season ⁤and had limited action last year, do you think he can adapt quickly and contribute meaningfully?

Jamie ‍Collins: It’s always a challenge jumping into a new team mid-season, especially‌ coming off ⁢limited playing time. However, King is an intelligent player;⁤ he knows the⁣ league and has adapted to different systems. The Ravens’‌ defensive system is ⁤intricate but ⁣built on solid fundamentals, so ⁤if he can grasp the ‍playbook quickly, I ⁤expect him to contribute sooner rather than later.

NewsDirectory3: With Marlon Humphrey filling most of the nickel snaps and Kyle Hamilton, along with Ar’Darius Washington, anchoring the safety ‌positions, how do you see King fitting in?

Jamie Collins: King’s fit is quite intriguing. ⁢While Humphrey is an established starter, using King in specific matchups against slot receivers or quicker backs can ‍be very ‍beneficial. He brings⁣ a unique skill set that can complement the Ravens’ defensive⁣ strategy, allowing for more ⁣dynamic formations. His⁣ presence can also give Humphrey a breather in terms of snaps, keeping both players ⁣fresh and effective throughout the season.

NewsDirectory3: ‍Lastly, the Ravens released rookie cornerback Ryan “Bump” Cooper Jr. to make⁤ room for⁢ King. In your opinion, ‍is this a clear indication of how ⁢the team values experience‍ over youth at this moment?

Jamie Collins: It certainly appears that ‌way. The⁣ Ravens are in a competitive‍ stage ‍in their season, especially with the playoffs on the horizon. While ‍developing young talent is crucial, the immediate needs of the team take precedence. King’s experience can‌ elevate the overall play of the secondary, providing‌ not only⁢ skills but also leadership⁢ insight that ‌a rookie⁢ simply can’t match at this critical juncture.

NewsDirectory3: Thank you for your insights, Jamie. It’s clear that Desmond‍ King’s signing has the potential to significantly impact the Ravens’ playoff ⁤chase.

Jamie Collins: Thank you! ⁢It will ‌be fascinating to watch how this unfolds on the field. ⁣
