Rayan Cherki, the French international, has signed a five-year contract wiht Manchester City, turning down a potential move to Manchester United. The highly touted midfielder, previously with lyon, is eager to make his mark under Pep Guardiola.
Cherki, who can play as a winger but prefers a central number 10 role, debuted for Lyon’s senior team at age 16. He tallied 29 goals and 45 assists in 185 appearances. While some view him as a possible successor to Kevin De Bruyne, who departed for Napoli, Cherki is focused on establishing his own identity.
Manchester City also acquired Netherlands international Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan as part of their midfield adjustments. Though, Cherki is steadfast to carve out his own path and emulate Rodri’s 2024 Ballon d’Or win.
“I’m not Kevin De Bruyne, he is the legend,” Cherki said. “I’m here to help the team and to write my own story. I hope to win all the time with the team.”
Cherki emphasized the appeal of joining a club where winning top honors is attainable. “When you see Rodri, he won the Ballon d’Or here – it’s clear that with Manchester City it’s possible and I am here for this,” he stated.
Guardiola’s vision for Cherki’s role also played a meaningful part in his decision. “When I spoke with Pep, he wanted me – he was very, very clear. Pep told me,’when you have the ball, you are free’,which is very good for me as it’s my first quality to help the team,” Cherki explained.
He added, “The system, the club, the city is very good. I wont to win and I think manchester City wants to win it all.”
What’s next
Cherki is expected to join the team for preseason training, where he will begin integrating into Guardiola’s system and competing for a key role in the squad.
