La Liga club Rayo Vallecano is barred from using its home stadium for the start of the new season due to the risk of supporters contracting Legionnaires’ disease, according to BBC Sport on July 30, 2026.

The decision forces the Madrid-based side to relocate its home fixtures just weeks before the league campaign begins. The move follows health concerns regarding the presence of the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease within the stadium’s facilities.

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which typically spread through contaminated water systems, such as cooling towers or plumbing, according to health reporting cited by BBC Sport.

The ban prevents the club from hosting matches at its traditional home ground until the risk is mitigated and the venue is cleared for public use. This disruption occurs during the critical final preparation window for the upcoming season.

Rayo Vallecano has not yet announced a permanent alternative venue for its home games, though the club must secure a stadium that meets La Liga’s operational and safety standards to avoid forfeiting home-field advantage.
