Interest in RCB Acquisition
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the recently crowned champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), are reportedly the subject of acquisition interest from several prominent Indian and US-based companies. Cric Bus reported that at least six entities have expressed interest in purchasing the franchise.
Among those reportedly considering a bid are Adani Group, Siram Institute’s Adar Poonawala, JSW Group (led by Parth Jindal), a Delhi-based industrialist, and two US stock companies. poonawala publicly expressed his admiration for RCB on X (formerly Twitter) on an unspecified date, signaling potential interest.
Potential Hurdles for JSW Group
Parth Jindal’s JSW Group faces a potential complication. The group already holds a 50% stake in the Delhi Capitals IPL franchise, alongside GMR Group. To acquire RCB, JSW would likely need to divest its ownership in Delhi Capitals, as the IPL regulations generally prohibit ownership of multiple teams.
Adani group’s Continued Pursuit
The Adani Group, which previously attempted to acquire the Gujarat Titans franchise without success, is considered a strong contender for RCB. The group has already demonstrated its commitment to cricket by acquiring the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and investing in the International League T20 (ILT20) in the United Arab Emirates ILT20 Official Website.
Previous Sale Rumors and RCB’s History
Rumors of a potential sale surfaced instantly after RCB’s championship victory in the 2024 season, ending an 18-year wait for a title.Though, team owners initially denied these reports.
The ownership history of RCB traces back to 2008 when businessman Vijay Mallya, then owner of Kingfisher Airlines, acquired the franchise for $11.1 crore (approximately $1.4 million USD at the time, exchange rates fluctuate). The financial difficulties and eventual collapse of Kingfisher Airlines led to the ownership transferring to Diageo, the parent company of United Breweries.
Background on the IPL and Franchise Values
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the world’s most valuable cricket league, with franchise values soaring in recent years. The sale of RCB is expected to command a significant price, reflecting the team’s recent championship win, large fanbase, and the overall growth of the league. In 2023, the Ahmedabad franchise was sold for approximately $577.5 million ESPN Cricinfo - IPL Ahmedabad Franchise Sold, indicating the potential scale of the RCB deal.
