A Three-Year Silence Broken
ReactOS 0.4.15 is now available for download. This marks the first official release of the open-source Windows recreation in more than three years.
Designed to run legacy Windows applications, games, and drivers within a fully open operating system, the project aims to bridge the gap between open-source software and native Windows compatibility. According to GitHub tags and disc images released by the development team, the latest update follows the previous ReactOS 0.4.14 version that arrived in December 2021.
While the multi-year gap between releases is substantial, the new software version focuses heavily on bug fixes, driver improvements, and better compatibility with older Windows software rather than introducing groundbreaking new features.
Driver Upgrades and Modern Hardware Hurdles
The new release brings notable updates to storage and networking drivers, aiming to improve overall system stability and USB drive compatibility.
Developers have also implemented numerous updates to font support, the desktop shell, Windows APIs, themes, and file dialogs. A recent video shared by the ReactOS team demonstrated the operating system successfully running the Rayman Origins Demo.
Hardware compatibility remains a key focus for the project. Work is currently progressing on a graphical installer and UEFI support, which will eventually improve compatibility with modern PCs and the Steam Deck.
The 64-Bit Frontier and WOW64 Constraints
Additionally, ReactOS 0.4.15 serves as the first release to support the 64-bit x86 (amd64) CPU architecture far enough to reach the desktop environment.
However, a downloadable 64-bit version is not yet available because the team is still developing its own version of WOW64. Until that subsystem is ready, 64-bit ReactOS cannot run 32-bit Windows software, which constitutes the vast majority of compatible programs.
Targeting Windows XP Era Software
ReactOS remains primarily built to run software designed for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Programs utilizing APIs introduced in Windows Vista or later generally do not work on the platform.
The project has outlined plans to support applications built for Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1 in an eventual 0.5.0 release, though developers note that goal could take years to reach at the current pace of development.
For users seeking to run modern Windows software without Windows, the Wine and Proton compatibility layers on Linux remain far more capable alternatives.
Practical Deployment and Vintage Hardware Specs
Despite these limitations, the operating system remains a functional option for running older applications and games on vintage hardware.

The system requirements for ReactOS include an x86-based processor equivalent to a Pentium or later, at least 64 megabytes of RAM, and a drive with at least 450 megabytes of free space utilizing a FAT16 or FAT32 boot partition. Installing larger applications and games requires two gigabytes of storage or more.
Because hardware support is still limited, the ReactOS team recommends running the system inside a virtual machine or writing the live disc images to a USB drive using tools like Rufus or Balena Etcher.
