The reading achievement gap in the United States is a longstanding issue with far-reaching consequences, impacting not only individuals but also society as a whole. While often discussed in the context of education, the ramifications extend to areas like economic stability, the criminal justice system, and public health. This Black History Month, it’s crucial to recognize that addressing this gap isn’t simply an educational imperative, but a societal one.

The High Cost of Illiteracy

Lack of literacy is inextricably linked to significant societal costs. The United States currently spends over 2023 $120 billion annually on special education, with dyslexia – a learning disability often characterized by reading difficulties – accounting for roughly one-third of these expenditures. Despite this substantial investment, students with dyslexia continue to lag behind their peers in reading proficiency, with a disproportionately high dropout rate – more than twice the typical rate – and limited access to higher education. Only approximately 5 percent of students with dyslexia pursue a college degree, compared to 60 percent of their neurotypical counterparts.

However, the problem extends beyond those formally diagnosed with dyslexia. According to the Nation’s Report Card, around 70 percent of students across some states, including New York and Georgia, fail to meet established reading standards. This disparity is particularly pronounced along racial lines, with approximately 40 percent of white students demonstrating proficiency in reading, compared to less than 20 percent of Black students.

Literacy and the Criminal Justice System

The connection between low literacy skills and involvement in the criminal justice system is well-documented. The Department of Justice recognizes poor reading ability as a contributing factor to juvenile delinquency, and research indicates that approximately half of all prison inmates struggle with reading and writing. Nearly half of adults with the lowest literacy skills live in poverty and experience significant challenges securing full- or part-time employment.

The human cost of this cycle is profound. One incarcerated individual, David, shared his experience, stating, “Like many inmates here in prison, I didn’t get my diploma from high school do [sic] to my learning disability of dyslexia…The one quote I have heard many times [at school] and can’t stand hearing is ‘Not trying hard enough.’ Plus all of the other quotes [being labeled lazy, dumb, careless, immature] are really hard on a kid’s self-esteem.” His story underscores the damaging impact of undiagnosed and unsupported learning difficulties on an individual’s life trajectory.

A Transformative Role for Artificial Intelligence

Despite the persistence of these challenges, there is growing optimism surrounding the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to drive meaningful change. Recent advancements in AI-powered educational interventions are demonstrating promising results, offering a potential pathway to address the reading achievement gap in a scalable and cost-effective manner.

A recent clinical trial involving an AI-based expert system showed that students struggling with reading, even those beyond third grade – a point at which interventions often prove less effective – experienced significant gains in reading proficiency. The trial, conducted with a population comprised of approximately 80 percent minority students from low-income communities, demonstrated a positive effect even in challenging circumstances, such as during the COVID pandemic when schools faced staffing shortages.

Implications of AI-Driven Interventions

The success of this trial has several key implications. First, it suggests that the distinction between “poor” readers and those with dyslexia may be less critical than previously thought. The AI system focuses solely on addressing underlying language processing difficulties, regardless of their origin. This approach eliminates the need for costly neuropsychological evaluations, which can range from $5,000 to $10,000 per person.

Second, AI-powered interventions offer a non-judgmental learning environment. The system provides individualized instruction without the potential for bias that can sometimes influence human educators. Some struggling learners, particularly older students, may feel more comfortable interacting with a computer program than with a human specialist.

Finally, AI has the potential to level the playing field by decoupling outcomes from resources. Traditionally, schools in low-income districts have faced challenges in providing high-quality instruction due to limited funding for teacher training and instructional materials. AI offers a scalable solution that can deliver personalized learning experiences regardless of geographic location or socioeconomic status.

The AI innovation represents a shift towards individualized education, tailoring programs to each student’s unique strengths and weaknesses. Students like Jesseme Lynch, who initially felt “disappointed in myself because I couldn’t read the words like everybody else,” experienced a positive transformation after using the AI intervention, stating, “After Dysolve, I can tell what the words meant, and I could get good scores.” Similarly, Aaliyah Williams, who struggled to comprehend books in fifth grade, was able to read on grade level after the intervention and ultimately thrived in a college-level English course.

These stories highlight the importance of providing all children with the opportunity to succeed. By addressing the reading achievement gap, we can unlock potential and create a more equitable society. As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, it’s a fitting time to recognize the transformative power of AI in bridging this gap and empowering future generations.

Further research is underway, including a project involving an 88-year-old civil rights activist with dyslexia who is advocating for the use of this AI program within his community.
