Real Madrid vs Liverpool: Champions League Showdown Without Top Scorer

Real Madrid vs Liverpool: Champions League Showdown Without Top Scorer

November 27, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

Real Madrid will play against Liverpool in the Champions League for the ninth time this decade. However, they will be without their top scorer, Vinícius Júnior.

Real Madrid’s title defense has started poorly. They are currently in 18th place in the Champions League after losing to Lille and AC Milan. Their next challenge is a tough match at Anfield against Liverpool, who have won all four of their UCL matches so far and lead the Premier League with 31 points.

Historically, Real Madrid has had success against Liverpool, winning the Champions League finals in 2018 and 2022 and five of their last eight meetings. Despite this, Liverpool is favored to win even though Real Madrid is facing significant injuries. Key players like Rodrygo, Dani Carvajal, Éder Militão, David Alaba, and Aurélien Tchouaméni are all unavailable.

Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham will need to score in this match, especially if coach Carlo Ancelotti decides to use a defensive strategy.

Here is a possible lineup for Real Madrid:

  • Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois – The Belgian aims to recreate his impressive performance from the 2022 final against Liverpool.

  • Right Back: Fede Valverde – Valverde will fill in at right back due to Carvajal’s absence. Lucas Vázquez is available but might come off the bench.

  • Center Back: Raúl Asencio – Asencio, at just 21 years old, will make his Champions League debut.

  • Center Back: Antonio Rüdiger – Rüdiger must be vigilant to stop Liverpool, who recently scored four goals against Bayer Leverkusen.

  • Left Back: Ferland Mendy – Mendy will return to the starting lineup and needs to contain Mohamed Salah, who has scored 12 goals this season.

  • Defensive Midfielder: Eduardo Camavinga – Camavinga will play a key role in defense as Tchouaméni is injured.

  • Defensive Midfielder: Luka Modrić – With Valverde at right back, Modrić will contribute to the midfield.

  • Right Wing: Arda Güler – The young player is expected to start again after assisting in his last match.

  • Attacking Midfielder: Jude Bellingham – Bellingham has the chance to showcase his skills and scoring ability after a strong recent performance.

  • Left Wing: Kylian Mbappé – Mbappé will lead the attack in the absence of Vinícius Júnior.

  • Striker: Brahim Díaz – Díaz, who scored five goals for Morocco in international matches, needs to find that form with Real Madrid.

This match is crucial for both teams and could set the tone for the remainder of the Champions League campaign.
