Real Madrid’s Win Over Benfica ‘Victory Against Racism’ – Tchouameni & Vinicius Jr

Real Madrid Advances in Champions League Amidst Focus on Racism Allegations

Real Madrid secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over Benfica on Wednesday, a result midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni framed as “a victory for everyone who stands against racism.” The match was played against a backdrop of allegations that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni racially abused Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. During the first leg of the tie.

Vinicius Jr. Reportedly alleged the abuse occurred after he scored the only goal in the first leg. Prestianni denied the allegations and was subsequently handed a one-match ban by UEFA, ruling him out of Wednesday’s return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu. Before kickoff, home fans displayed a banner reading “no to racism” in Spanish, demonstrating support for Vinicius.

The game itself saw Benfica take an early lead through Rafa Silva in the 14th minute, but Real Madrid quickly responded with a goal from Tchouameni just two minutes later. The decisive goal came in the 80th minute from Vinicius Jr., securing a 3-1 aggregate victory for the Spanish side.

Tchouameni emphasized the significance of the win extending beyond the pitch. “I think there are more important things than this match, than football,” he said after the game. “Vinicius keeps his confidence and he keeps focused on what he needs to do. I think they made the right decision by not letting the boy [Prestianni] play this match. Like I said, there are things more important than football and this is a victory for all of us.”

Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold observed that Vinicius appeared unfazed by the surrounding controversy. “He was very chilled, very relaxed,” Alexander-Arnold said. “He didn’t need to score to send a message or show his mentality. He doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone because he’s shown time and time again how good he is. He steps up when we need him the most. He knows his quality and what he brings to the team.”

The victory sends Real Madrid through to the last 16, where they will face either Manchester City or Sporting. The match was also notable for the absence of Kylian Mbappé from the Real Madrid lineup due to a knee injury. Benfica, despite the loss, demonstrated resilience throughout the match, but ultimately fell short of overturning the first-leg deficit.

Vinicius Jr.’s late goal, his sixth in five games, proved to be the difference, solidifying his importance to the Real Madrid attack and adding another chapter to a story that has extended beyond the realm of sport and into a broader conversation about racism in football. The incident and subsequent response highlight the ongoing challenges faced by players and the need for continued vigilance and action against discrimination.
