Rebecca Hall Reflects on Her Complex Relationship with Woody Allen After 17 Years
Rebecca Hall has reconsidered her views on working with Woody Allen over the years. After donating her earnings from Allen’s film, A Rainy Day in New York, to Time’s Up in 2018, she expressed regret for collaborating with him. Now, she acknowledges that her feelings are more nuanced.
In a recent interview, Hall shared her struggles with making public statements about contentious issues. She stated, “I make the stuff; that’s how I am political. I kind of regret making that statement because I don’t think it’s the responsibility of his actors to speak to that situation.”
Hall reflected on her experience while filming Allen’s movie, noting that she felt “in a tangle” as allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein emerged. She felt compelled to speak up when Dylan Farrow’s allegations against Allen resurfaced. Hall emphasized the importance of believing women in these situations: “Yes, of course, there are complications and nuances in these stories, but we’re redressing a balance here.”
She clarified that her previous statement was mischaracterized. “It became, ‘another person denounces Woody Allen and regrets working with him,’ which is not what I said actually. I don’t regret working with him. He gave me a great job opportunity and he was kind to me.”
Hall mentioned that she no longer communicates with Allen. When asked about how she would handle the #MeToo backlash today, she stated, “I wouldn’t say anything – my policy actually is to be an artist. Don’t come out and state your stuff so much. I just think it’s my job.”
Her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress, marking a significant moment in her career.
