Rebekah Del Rio, the singer and songwriter best known for her performance of “Llorando” in David Lynch’s film, Mulholland Drive, has died. She was 57.
The Los Angeles coroner’s office confirmed that Del Rio died at her home in Los Angeles on Monday, june 23. The cause of death has not been released. Del Rio’s rendition of “Llorando,” a Spanish version of Roy Orbison’s “Crying,” is considered a highlight of the 2001 film. In the scene,Del Rio performs the song a cappella in Club Silencio, later collapsing to reveal her singing was a lip-synced performance.
Before her collaboration with Lynch, Del Rio, of Mexican, Italian, and Sephardic heritage, performed country music in San Diego. She had been singing “Crying” a cappella since the early 1990s,explaining that bands often struggled with the song’s chord changes. Following the 1995 murder of Selena, the Tejano pop star, del Rio recorded a spanish version of the song.
While living in Nashville, writing and recording country music, Del Rio met with David Lynch in Los Angeles. During the meeting, Lynch asked her to sing “Llorando” and secretly recorded the performance. Del Rio recalled the experience as brief, lasting only “one and a half songs, two cigarettes, a cup of coffee.”
During the filming of Mulholland Drive,Lynch initially wanted Del Rio to lip-sync to a recording of “Llorando.” However, Del Rio insisted on singing live for each take so that actors Naomi Watts and Laura Harring could experience the full emotional impact of the song.
