Rebel Revival: How Harajuku’s ‘Mr. Brute’ is Bringing Back the Raw Edge of American Fashion
Discovering the Allure of American Casual Style with Sawada
Sawada, a fashion enthusiast, shares his passion for American casual style, which he believes is more than just a trend – it’s a way of life.
As someone who works in a store that specializes in American clothing, Sawada has a unique perspective on the latest fashion trends. “Denim is, of course, popular, but our store has a lot of 50s-style items that are different from typical American casual wear,” he explains. “Hawaiian and bowling shirts are popular in spring and summer, and leather riders are popular in autumn and winter. There are many American casual items with distinctive designs, but this season I recommend a style that gives off a 50s vibe by incorporating western shirts, slacks, and flared denim into your outfit.”
For Sawada, the appeal of American clothing and fashion is simple: it’s cool. “That’s it,” he says with a smile. “Ever since I first became interested in it, it’s been the same for me. American-made items are made roughly, in a good way, and the designs and colors are new and exciting, so I was shocked when I got my hands on them for the first time.”
Sawada’s love for American fashion is deeply rooted in his admiration for iconic figures like James Dean and The Brute. “I particularly like James Dean and The Brute, which have a bad boy element that wasn’t in the clothes that were popular at the time,” he says. “They’re cool not just in terms of fashion, but also in terms of the culture, so the more I got to know about them the more I got into them.”
Must-Have Items for a 50s-Inspired Wardrobe
Sawada shares his top picks for creating a stylish and timeless wardrobe inspired by the 1950s.
Levi’s 501XX
The first pair of Levi’s 501XX Sawada ever bought was from the 1940s. It’s a memorable item that he bought at a local shop in Osaka when he was 19 years old, using money he saved from a part-time job. They were about 30 inches and cost about 100,000 yen at the time.
