recession Could Open Doors for Homebuyers, Survey Suggests

Updated May 25, 2025

A recent Realtor.com survey indicates that a‍ majority of potential homebuyers are bracing for a recession. Though, some see a silver lining: an opportunity to enter the housing market.

the survey found that more then 60% of respondents anticipate an economic downturn ⁤within the ⁣next year. Interestingly, almost 30% believe this could make buying a home easier. The⁣ prospect of lower mortgage rates and less competition are key factors driving this optimism.

Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com, noted that while concerns exist, some buyers foresee opportunities ⁢in a downturn.

The survey also highlighted that individual financial situations frequently enough outweigh broader economic worries.Over half of those surveyed, 54%, said a recession wouldn’t change their⁣ plans to buy a home, while only 15% said it would ⁣deter them.

Hale added that many buyers are driven by personal needs such as growing families or new jobs,⁤ which can overshadow short-term economic uncertainties.

Current hurdles for Homebuyers

Even without a‍ recession, potential buyers face significant challenges. The most common obstacle, cited by 44% of respondents, is the limited number of homes available.‍ While listings have improved recently, they remain more than 16% below historical averages. Budgetary constraints were a major concern ⁢for 36% ‍of buyers, while others pointed⁤ to credit availability and mortgage qualifications.

Notably, only ⁢8% of those surveyed mentioned competition from other buyers as a significant ⁢hurdle.

The report suggests that increased time on the market, a moderate rise in listings, and more stable pricing are contributing⁢ to a less stressful home search experience.

What’s⁤ next

As economic conditions evolve, potential homebuyers will need to⁢ weigh‍ the risks and opportunities carefully. Those with stable finances⁤ and long-term goals may find that a recession provides a chance to⁣ achieve their dreams of homeownership.
