Record Catechumens: Sydney Archdiocese Sees Surge in Catholic Conversions | OSV News

February 25, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

Sydney, Australia – The Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney has reported a record number of adults preparing to join the Church, signaling a notable resurgence of faith within the region and echoing similar trends observed internationally. According to a press release issued on February 24, 2026, March 9th marked the annual Rite of Election at St. Mary’s Cathedral, where 338 catechumens are preparing for baptism at the Easter Vigil, alongside an additional 119 candidates set to be welcomed into full communion with the Catholic Church.

Archbishop Anthony Fisher of Sydney described the figures as “a profound sign” of growth and vitality within the Church, stating it is “proof that the Holy Spirit is alive and active.” The archdiocese reported a significant increase in both catechumens – those not previously baptized – rising by 35% and candidates – those already baptized in another Christian tradition – increasing by 95% over the past year.

The Rite of Election, held on the first Sunday of Lent, represents a formal acknowledgement by the Church of those who have expressed a desire for baptism. During the ceremony at St. Mary’s Cathedral on February 22nd, Archbishop Fisher addressed the congregation, noting that this increase in those seeking baptism is not isolated to Sydney. “It isn’t exclusive to Sydney, but in many parts of the world right now, as more and more people say their ‘Yes’ to God,” he said.

This surge in conversions comes as other parts of the world also report similar trends. In January, the Archdiocese of Paris announced a council initiative in response to a significant rise in conversions among adults and youth in France. In 2025, the archdiocese reported approximately 2,652 adult baptisms at Easter, with an estimated 17,800 baptisms occurring nationwide.

Archbishop Fisher, in his homily, explored the motivations behind this renewed interest in faith. He recounted a conversation with one individual who described feeling “lost” and lacking direction before finding purpose through Christianity. “You didn’t know what you believed or wanted out of life. You lacked direction, purpose, hope,” he relayed, reflecting the sentiments expressed by a member of the congregation.

The archbishop highlighted that while initial attraction to the Church often stems from its beauty, liturgy, or message, the deeper conversion is often a more gradual process. He explained that many are drawn in by “a hunger for beauty and a friend’s encouragement,” but the intellectual and spiritual awakening comes later. “What drove you in was a culture not providing you with the answers, inspiration, happiness you craved. It was God’s grace giving you the courage to step towards Him,” he stated.

The Archdiocese of Sydney’s experience reflects a broader phenomenon of individuals seeking meaning and belonging in a rapidly changing world. The record numbers participating in the Rite of Election suggest a growing openness to faith and a desire for spiritual connection. The event itself involved the participation of 310 godparents and sponsors from 54 parishes, demonstrating a strong network of support for those entering the Catholic faith. Simon Yeak, who oversees the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults in the archdiocese, described the experience as “unlike anything I’ve been part of,” emphasizing the unexpected scale of the increase in converts.

The influx of new members is not merely a statistical increase, but a testament to the enduring appeal of the Church and its message, according to officials. The archdiocese’s commitment to evangelization is reflected in the growing numbers and the dedicated support provided to those preparing for baptism and full communion. The atmosphere surrounding the Rite of Election, described as one of “nervous excitement” and familial connection, underscores the welcoming spirit of the community.

The growing number of converts in Sydney, alongside similar trends in Paris and elsewhere, suggests a potential shift in religious landscapes. While broader societal trends often point towards secularization, these figures indicate a continued, and in some cases growing, desire for faith and spiritual fulfillment. The Archdiocese of Sydney’s experience offers a compelling case study of how the Church can adapt and thrive in the 21st century, attracting new members through its message of hope and community.
