Record Number of Journalists Killed in 2024, Report Finds
Washington, D.C. – A new report from Reporters without Borders (RSF) paints a grim picture of the dangers faced by journalists worldwide, revealing a record-breaking number of media professionals killed and imprisoned in 2024.
The institution’s annual report, released Thursday, documents the deaths of 54 journalists, the highest number in five years. Most of these fatalities occurred in conflict zones, with Palestine emerging as the deadliest location.
“We are witnessing an alarming escalation of attacks against journalists, especially in areas of conflict,” RSF stated in it’s report.
The Israeli military has been identified as the deadliest entity for journalists, with 16 journalists killed in Palestine and two in lebanon, all attributed to Israeli soldiers. since the outbreak of conflict in Gaza following Hamas attacks in October 2023, a staggering 159 journalists have lost their lives in the region, with 145 of those deaths occurring in Palestinian territories.
Beyond the Middle East,Pakistan,Bangladesh,and Mexico also saw a significant number of journalist deaths,with seven,five,and five fatalities respectively. The ongoing war in Ukraine claimed the lives of two more journalists.
the report also highlights the alarming number of journalists currently imprisoned, with 550 individuals behind bars, a 7% increase from the previous year.
Adding to the grim statistics, RSF reports that 55 journalists remain captive, with the majority held in syria. Many of these individuals were abducted by ISIS during the Syrian civil war, and their whereabouts remain unknown.
“The fall of the Assad regime offers a glimmer of hope for press freedom in Syria,” RSF stated, expressing optimism that the situation may improve.
The organization’s findings underscore the urgent need for increased protection and support for journalists working in perilous environments.
