Record Number of Journalists Killed​ in 2024, Report Finds

Washington, D.C. – ⁢A new report from Reporters without Borders ⁢(RSF) paints a grim picture of the dangers⁢ faced by journalists worldwide, ⁢revealing a record-breaking ⁢number‍ of media professionals‌ killed and imprisoned in 2024.

The ‍institution’s annual report, released Thursday, documents ‍the deaths ⁤of 54 journalists, the highest number in five years.‍ Most of‌ these fatalities occurred in conflict zones, with Palestine⁢ emerging as the deadliest location.

“We are‌ witnessing an ​alarming escalation of attacks against journalists, especially in areas of conflict,” ⁢RSF stated in it’s report.

The Israeli military​ has been identified as the deadliest⁢ entity for journalists, with 16 journalists ⁢killed in Palestine and two in lebanon, all⁤ attributed to​ Israeli soldiers. since‍ the ⁢outbreak of ⁤conflict⁣ in Gaza following Hamas ⁤attacks in October 2023, a staggering 159 journalists have lost their lives⁤ in the region, with⁣ 145 of those deaths occurring ‌in Palestinian territories.

Beyond⁢ the Middle ​East,Pakistan,Bangladesh,and ⁤Mexico also saw⁢ a​ significant number of journalist deaths,with seven,five,and five fatalities respectively. The ‌ongoing ‍war ⁢in Ukraine claimed the⁤ lives ​of two more‍ journalists.

the report ‌also highlights the alarming‌ number of journalists currently imprisoned, with 550 individuals behind bars, a ‌7% increase from the previous year.

Adding to the grim statistics, RSF ⁤reports that 55 journalists remain captive, with the majority⁤ held in syria. Many⁣ of these individuals were abducted by ISIS during the Syrian civil war, and ‌their whereabouts remain unknown.

“The fall of the Assad regime offers a glimmer ‌of hope for press freedom in Syria,” ⁢RSF‍ stated, expressing optimism that the situation may improve.

The organization’s ​findings underscore the urgent need ​for increased protection and support for journalists working in perilous environments.

According to the association’s annual report, 54 ‌journalists were killed in 2024,‍ marking the highest number of fatalities⁣ in five years. Conflict zones proved particularly dangerous, with​ palestine emerging ⁤as the deadliest‍ location, mostly‍ due to actions of the Israeli ⁣military.

The report attributes 16 journalist deaths in Palestine and two in Lebanon to Israeli soldiers,⁣ raising serious concerns about press⁢ freedom in the region.
