Following a notable third day at the Arqana Autumn Sale, we spoke with Yannick Fouin, a prominent figure in the racing community who successfully purchased a standout yearling for clients of Nicolas de Watrigant.
Newsdirectory3: Yannick, congratulations on the acquisition of the yearling now named King Dalee. What can you tell us about him?
Yannick Fouin: Thank you! King Dalee is truly exceptional. He is a son of Galiway and a half-brother to the G1 Deutsches Derby winner Sisfahan. I’ve followed this family closely as I part-bred him, and I had high expectations. Today, he really stood out in terms of both presence and pedigree.
Newsdirectory3: The bidding was quite competitive, culminating in a final price of €255,000. What was going through your mind during the bidding process?
Yannick Fouin: It was intense, as you would expect for a colt of his caliber. We had done our homework, and I was confident in our decision. I knew I had to be strategic with my bids while keeping in mind the great potential this horse has for the future.
Newsdirectory3: Beyond King Dalee, there were some impressive sales throughout the event. Notably, a filly by Doctor Dino sold for €142,000. What stood out about her?
Yannick Fouin: She’s a remarkable athlete with an impressive lineage, being a half-sister to G3 Prix Sagan winner Messagere and Grade 3 winner Paradiso. Her class and movement were evident, and I believe she’ll thrive under training in France. It’s exciting to see such talent being recognized at sales like this.
Newsdirectory3: The figures from the sale indicate a significant downturn, with a 27.6% drop in gross sales compared to previous years. How do you interpret this trend, and what does it mean for the industry?
Yannick Fouin: The decline is certainly noteworthy, but it also reflects the current economic climate and the changing dynamics within the breeding and racing industries. With any sale, there are fluctuations, and I believe it underscores the importance of quality over quantity. It’s crucial for buyers and sellers to adapt and focus on what truly matters: the horses’ potential and their pedigree.
Newsdirectory3: Looking forward, what are your expectations for King Dalee and how do you see his career unfolding?
Yannick Fouin: I have high hopes for King Dalee. Given his pedigree and physical attributes, he has all the right elements to become a successful racehorse. It will be exciting to see how he develops and how we can help him reach his fullest potential. We’re committed to taking our time and allowing him to grow into the horse we know he can be.
Newsdirectory3: Thank you for your insights, Yannick. We look forward to following King Dalee’s journey!
Yannick Fouin: My pleasure! Thank you for having me.
