Music Bridges generations: Recorder Club Shares Joy wiht Seniors, Previews Festival performance
The simple melody of the recorder resonated with warmth and connection this past Saturday as the Recorder Club De Woudholten traded their usual classroom for the cozy living room of De Hazelaar. For some of the young musicians, it marked their very first public performance – a milestone celebrated with both excitement and a touch of nerves.
The intimate concert featured a diverse program, beginning with pieces played on the alto recorder, an instrument already familiar within the club. The performance then transitioned to the brighter tones of the soprano recorder, including a selection of beloved Christmas carols. The audience, comprised of residents of De Hazelaar, responded with visible delight, enthusiastically singing along to each familiar tune. A particularly moving moment occurred during “Silent Night,” when children not actively playing joined their voices with the residents, creating a beautiful, multi-generational chorus.
Beyond the musical skill on display, the event underscored the powerful role arts programs play in fostering intergenerational connections. Studies have shown that musical engagement can significantly improve cognitive function and emotional well-being in seniors, while performance opportunities build confidence and teamwork skills in young people.
The Recorder Club de Woudholten isn’t limiting their performance to De Hazelaar. Thay will be showcasing their talents at the WG van der Hulst Festival at the Kalkovens, beginning at 4:30 PM. This larger performance promises an even more expansive program, including a special reunion with former club members who are dusting off their recorders to participate. The festival provides a unique opportunity for the public to experience the joy of recorder music and learn more about the club’s lessons and activities.
For those interested in learning more about recorder lessons or joining the Recorder Club De Woudholten, the WG van der Hulst Festival at the Kalkovens is an excellent starting point. The club offers a welcoming environment for musicians of all ages and skill levels.
