While a first-time kidney stone is unpleasant, the risk of experiencing another one is significant. Studies show recurrence rates ranging from 6.1% to 66.9%.

The recent meta-analysis, which reviewed data from 53 studies encompassing over 488,000 patients, aimed to pinpoint specific factors that increase the likelihood of recurrence.   • Prior Suspected Episodes: Individuals who had suspected kidney stone episodes before a confirmed diagnosis were also at higher risk.
  • Surgery: A history of surgery related to kidney stones is linked to increased recurrence.
  • Asymptomatic Stones: The presence of concurrent, asymptomatic (non-obstructing) stones can contribute to recurrence.
  • Pelvic or Lower Pole Stones: Stones located in the pelvic or lower pole region of the kidney were associated with higher recurrence rates.
  • 24-Hour Urine Test Completion: Interestingly, completing a 24-hour urine test was also identified as a risk factor, potentially indicating a greater awareness and investigation of underlying metabolic issues.

Subgroup Analysis Reveals Further Insights

A deeper look at the data revealed that certain risk factors had a particularly strong association with radiographic kidney stone recurrence. Patients with a higher BMI (with an Odds Ratio of 1.062), a personal history of nephrolithiasis (Odds Ratio of 1.402), or a history of surgery (Odds Ratio of 3.178) demonstrated a significantly elevated risk.

The Role of Fluid Intake and Urine Composition
