Hurricane Gabrielle is forecast to bring exceptionally heavy rainfall to the Iberian Peninsula, with potential accumulations reaching 180 millimeters in localized areas within a 24-hour period. The storm has already impacted Portugal and western Spain, bringing fierce thunderstorms.
The Spanish Meteorological Service (AEMET) has issued a red alert for the regions of Valencia,Castellon,and Tarragona,remaining in effect until midnight on Monday. Thes alerts signal a high risk of dangerous weather conditions.
Potential for Landslides and Flash Flooding
Authorities are warning of a significant risk of landslides and flash floods due to the anticipated heavy rainfall. Areas under the red alert could experience over 180 millimeters of precipitation in 24 hours, while regions under orange alerts may receive up to 100 millimeters daily.
An orange alert remains in effect for these areas even beyond Monday, indicating continued thunderstorm activity and potential for hazardous conditions.
Recent History of Severe Flooding
The Iberian Peninsula is particularly vulnerable to extreme rainfall events. In September 2023, Hurricane Dana caused devastating flash floods in the region, with some areas receiving up to 500 millimeters of precipitation.
