Mysterious Illness in Aswan, Egypt: What’s Happening and How Are Authorities Responding?
Since September 11, dozens of patients have been transferred to hospitals in southern Egypt’s Aswan governorate, with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. The cause of the illness has yet to be confirmed.
The Ministry of Health and Population has reported an increase in cases of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, primarily in the village of Abu al-Rish and surrounding villages.
Initial Reports and Speculations
Some social media accounts have referred to “cholera cases” in Aswan, while others have speculated about the cause of the illness. However, the Health Ministry has emphasized that the cases are not widespread and are limited to specific areas.
On September 15, reports emerged of 124 people in Wadi al-Arab village contracting gastrointestinal symptoms, which the Aswan governorate attributed to food poisoning from eating sweets during the Mawlid al-Nababi celebration.
Investigations and Denials
The head of the drinking water and sanitation company and Aswan’s director general of health have denied reports of a cholera outbreak, attributing the cases to “summer seasonal disease virus or consumption of contaminated food.”
Authorities have also denied reports of a woman’s death from poisoning in the village of Abu al-Rish, stating that she had a pre-existing medical condition.
Committee Investigation and Water Sampling
Aswan Governor Ismail Kamal has tasked a committee to investigate the cause of the illness, including sampling drinking water and conducting chemical analysis in specialized laboratories.
The committee has reported that the drinking water conforms to specifications, but the final report is expected within 48 hours.
Protests and Demands
Residents of the village of Abu al-Rish have blocked the Aswan agricultural road, demanding the dismissal of the water station supplying water to their village due to concerns about drinking water quality.
Health Ministry Response
The Ministry of Health and Population has sent a team from the Preventive Medicine Branch to Aswan to investigate the cause of the illness and provide medical care to patients.
The ministry has emphasized the importance of proper hygiene practices, frequent hand washing, and drinking safe water to prevent the spread of gastroenteritis.
Conclusion
The situation in Aswan remains under investigation, with the Health Ministry working to determine the cause of the illness and prevent further cases. Residents are advised to follow proper hygiene practices and take precautions to prevent the spread of gastroenteritis.
