Hiroki Tsunoda’s Red Bull Promotion Blocked: Nico Rosberg Explains Why
Staying on the F1 grid is not easy, and Hiroki Tsunoda will not turn down a seat at Red Bull Racing unless other options are presented to him. Tsunoda is in talks with other teams for 2025, but it’s hard to imagine he has a long-term future at Red Bull as long as his potential as Max Verstappen’s teammate continues to be overlooked.
Tsunoda failed to complete the race in Baku after colliding with Lance Stroll on the first lap and suffering serious damage to his car.
In Singapore, he shone in qualifying and advanced to Q3, but got off to a slow start and missed the chance to add to his 22 points this season.
Nico Rosberg on Tsunoda’s Future at Red Bull
Nico Rosberg was asked about Tsunoda’s future at Red Bull and replied: ”I think Yuki is doing well, and his strength at his peak, like yesterday, is very strong. He had a really good qualifying.”
“The problem is that he is a bit inconsistent. His attitude is sometimes very aggressive, and that’s why this year he was passed over when we considered him as Perez’s replacement.”
“So it was definitely a tough blow for him because I think he had hopes of being in that position. But either way, he’s doing a good job as a running back.”
In Singapore, Red Bull’s concerns about his temperament problems proved to be well-founded.
Tsunoda is one of the few drivers who has never finished on the podium, which is not surprising given that he has spent his entire F1 career with the same team.
However, only once did he show any glimpse of his potential to become a world-class F1 driver.
His performance in Mexico in 2023 was exceptional, showing his speed until a poorly judged move against Oscar Piastri cost him points.
His sudden action against Lance Stroll during practice in Singapore may have been due to residual frustration from the collision in the previous race.
But he has also shown that he isn’t always able to do so when he needs to stay calm under pressure.
Martin Brundle at least had some sympathy for Yuki Tsunoda, as he received an unwanted radio message during the race while chasing a top-10 finishing position.
Tsunoda is undoubtedly fast, but questions are likely to be raised about his long-term future in F1 when the 2025 season arrives.
