Verstappen Aims for Podium Amid McLaren’s Strong Pace at Spanish GP
Updated may 31, 2025
red bull’s Helmut Marko tempered expectations for the F1 Spanish GP, suggesting that a podium finish is the best Max Verstappen can realistically achieve. McLaren demonstrated superior speed in Barcelona, presenting a formidable challenge.
The high-speed nature of the Barcelona track was expected to favor Red Bull, similar to Imola. However, McLaren appears to have a distinct advantage, locking out the front row in qualifying.
Marko acknowledged McLaren’s edge, stating that while Red Bull has made progress, the gap remains significant. He noted the team’s struggles with grip in hotter conditions and on softer tires.
“The balance was more satisfying this time. It’s just that the softer the tyres and the higher the temperatures, the less grip we have… But overall we’ve come a step closer to McLaren,” Marko told sky Sports.
Despite the challenges, Marko remains optimistic about securing a podium. “We can’t be optimistic for the race… But a podium should at least be possible,” he said.
Verstappen echoed Marko’s sentiments, conceding that third place was the maximum achievable result given the car’s performance. He emphasized the importance of maximizing the car’s potential around the Barcelona circuit.
“we were lacking all weekend compared to them [McLaren]. We executed well. Third is where we more or less should be. It’s fun. Around here it’s about squeezing everything out of the car,” Verstappen said.
what’s next
