Ahead of ​the Canadian Grand Prix,Red Bull voiced concerns to Formula 1 officials about potential efforts to manipulate Max Verstappen into receiving a one-race ban. Team principal Christian Horner ​said the team alerted the FIA, the ⁢sport’s governing body, to the possibility of “gamesmanship” from rival teams targeting Verstappen’s super license penalty points.

Verstappen,a ‌four-time world champion,arrived in Montreal ​carrying 11 penalty points on his license. A total of 12 ​points ⁤triggers an ​automatic suspension. The ⁢points stemmed partly from ⁢a collision⁢ with George Russell of ⁣Mercedes at the‌ Spanish Grand Prix. verstappen​ will not have ⁢any points removed until after Red Bull’s ⁢home race in Austria on June ⁢29.

Horner said Red ‍Bull raised the issue with FIA race director Rui Marques after⁤ a drivers’ meeting.The team wanted officials to be aware of potential tactics aimed at⁢ forcing‍ Verstappen into a ​penalty situation. “It was unavoidable that there was going to be some potential ⁤gamesmanship,” Horner told reporters. “We just said to him, look, could they please keep an eye on ⁤it because there’s been, obviously, comments have been raised in the media.”
