Iran Battles Severe Winter Weather, Red Crescent Mobilizes to Aid 18,000
A recent and intense period of heavy rainfall and snowfall, coupled with a notable cold snap, has brought widespread disruption to large parts of Iran.The Iranian Red Crescent Society has been at the forefront of responding to the crisis, providing critical assistance to communities impacted by snowstorms, blizzards, and flooding.
As of Friday, December 20, 2024, the red Crescent reports that their relief operations have directly benefited approximately 18,000 people, particularly in the southern regions of the country.This assistance includes the provision of essential relief items to 13,224 individuals and food supplies for another 4,713, addressing immediate needs for shelter and sustenance.
The scale of the response has been considerable, with 151 Red Crescent branches activating across 225 operational sites nationwide. Beyond simply distributing aid,the institution has focused on protecting vulnerable populations,successfully transferring 139 individuals to safer locations. Eleven people with injuries sustained during the weather events have been transported to medical centers for treatment, while two others received outpatient care in the provinces of East Azerbaijan and Fars.
Tragically, the severe weather has claimed lives. the Red Crescent confirmed the heartbreaking loss of two children during this period. Adding to the sorrow, a dedicated Red Crescent rescuer was also killed while working to assist flood victims in Jahrom, southern Iran, demonstrating the immense risks faced by first responders during these emergencies.
The Red Crescent’s rapid and extensive mobilization underscores the importance of preparedness and coordinated disaster response in mitigating the impact of extreme weather events. This situation highlights the increasing vulnerability of communities worldwide to climate-related disasters and the critical role of humanitarian organizations in providing life-saving assistance.
