Manchester United Set to Appoint Ruben Amorim as New Coach
Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim is expected to be announced as Manchester United’s new coach on Thursday after the Portuguese Football League leaders reached an agreement with English club Sporting.
According to reports, the 39-year-old coach will remain with his side Sporting for the next three matches, including next week’s Champions League match against Manchester City.
Amorim’s Expected Start Date
Amorim is expected to begin his duties with the Red Devils during the international break next month, with his first Premier League match at home to Ipswich on the 24th of the same month.
Transfer Details
Sky Sports reported that Manchester United paid Sporting an additional one million euros, in addition to the release clause price of 10 million euros ($11 million), to sign the coach.
Sporting confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that United had agreed to meet the penalty clause.
Manchester United’s Coaching Change
Manchester United sacked their former Dutch coach Erik ten Haag on Monday after a disastrous start to the season and appointed his assistant and compatriot, ex-team striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, as interim coach.
Van Nistelrooy’s side qualified for the quarter-finals of the League Cup with a 5-2 win over Leicester City on Wednesday.
“I’m here to help the club, and I’ll continue to help as long as it’s needed, and in the days to come, in whatever capacity, I’m here to help build the club’s future,” Nistelrooy said.
United’s Poor Start to the Season
Despite spending heavily in the summer transfer market, Ten Hague paid the price for United’s poor start to the season.
Prior to the win over Leicester, the team had one win in their last 8 matches in all competitions, and are 14th in the league with 11 points from 3 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses.
