Bregman Injury Update: Red Sox Third Baseman Still Weeks Away
updated June 8, 2025
boston Red Sox fans will have to wait a bit longer for the return of Alex Bregman. Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that while Bregman is feeling good after beginning a running program at Fenway Park, the third baseman is still weeks away from rejoining the lineup. Bregman has been sidelined since May 23 because of a strained right quadriceps.
“The progression is going well,” Cora said, adding that the team will evaluate Bregman’s progress daily. However, he cautioned that Bregman is “still far away from him starting the baseball progression.”
The injury is similar to a left quad strain that sidelined bregman for 58 games while he played for the Houston Astros in 2021. Bregman began his running program Thursday and will have Sunday off before resuming next week.
Prior to the injury, Bregman, in his first season with Boston after signing a $120 million, three-year free agent deal, was batting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.his absence has been felt; the Red sox have lost nine of 13 games as he was injured. The team is adjusting to the loss of Bregman’s offensive production and defensive stability.
In Bregman’s absence, Marcelo Mayer has started 10 games at third base. Mayer hit his first career home run in Friday’s 9-6 loss. Though, he was not in Saturday’s lineup against left-hander Ryan Yarbrough and is unlikely to play Sunday against Carlos Rodón, another southpaw.
Right-hander kutter Crawford, dealing with patellar tendinitis in his right knee, is also working toward a return. Cora said Crawford is expected to throw a bullpen session at the end of next week as he prepares for a minor league rehabilitation assignment. Initial plans for Crawford to begin a rehab assignment this week were derailed after he experienced wrist pain. Cora clarified Friday that Crawford has no structural damage.
What’s next
The Red Sox will continue to monitor Alex Bregman’s injury recovery and Kutter Crawford’s rehab progress, hoping for their return to bolster the team as they navigate the season.
