Hunter Dobbins Addresses Yankees Comments, Father’s Baseball Past
Boston Red Sox rookie Hunter Dobbins is clarifying earlier statements made about the New York Yankees.Prior to his first career start against them, Dobbins said he would retire before pitching for the Yankees. Now,he’s addressing a report questioning claims about his father’s past baseball career.
Dobbins addressed the New York Post story Wednesday, stating there was nothing “nefarious” about his previous comments regarding his father’s supposed connections to the Yankees.
“My feelings and all that are based on my personal experiences and nothing to do with growing up or family,” Dobbins said. “The whole backstory is stuff I heard growing up and seen pictures of from my dad…I don’t go and fact-check my dad or anything like that.”
A previous feature mentioned Dobbins saying his father, Lance Dobbins, had been drafted twice by the Yankees before being traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks and was friends with Andy Pettitte. However, the Post reported finding no evidence to support these claims.
Dobbins said he has spoken to his father “a little, but not really” about the discrepancies.
Dobbins, who is scheduled to pitch against the Yankees again Saturday, stated his focus remains on the upcoming game. He is 3-1 with a 4.20 ERA this season. The Red Sox rookie understands the attention surrounding the story, given the historic rivalry between Boston and New York.
“This is a great rivalry,” Dobbins said. “Two cities that have a long history together… It adds to the game, and we just have to embrace it and keep rolling.”
What’s next
Dobbins is preparing to face the Yankees again at Fenway Park on Saturday, aiming to improve upon his earlier performance against them. He hopes to minimize distractions and concentrate on his pitching.
