Resveratrol May Ease Anxiety, Stress, Research Shows
Updated June 12, 2025
A new study involving mice suggests that resveratrol, a natural compound found in grapes and berries, may have anti-stress effects. The compound appears to work by blocking the action of an enzyme associated with stress control in the brain.
The findings shed light on how resveratrol impacts neurological processes. Ying Xu, a research associate professor in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, suggests that resveratrol could be a viable alternative to customary medications for individuals facing anxiety and stress disorders.

Research has linked resveratrol to various health benefits. While prior studies indicated that the compound has antidepressant effects, its relationship with phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), an enzyme influenced by the stress hormone corticosterone, was previously unknown.
Corticosterone regulates the body’s stress response. Though, excessive stress can lead to elevated levels of this hormone circulating in the brain, perhaps leading to the growth of depression or other mental health conditions.
Xu noted that current antidepressants primarily target serotonin or noradrenaline activity in the brain. however, only about one-third of patients with depression achieve full remission with these medications.
The study on mice demonstrated that PDE4, triggered by high levels of corticosterone, induces depression- and anxiety-like behaviors.
The enzyme reduces cyclic adenosine monophosphate, a signaling molecule involved in processes like cell division and movement, ultimately causing physical changes in the brain.
Resveratrol exhibited neuroprotective effects against corticosterone by inhibiting PDE4 expression. This research provides a foundation for exploring the compound’s
