Warmate: A Suicide Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for Modern Combat
The Warmate is a cutting-edge, suicide unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed and manufactured by the Polish defense company WB Group. This advanced UAV is part of the Warmate family, which includes several versions, each tailored for specific operations such as reconnaissance and attack.
First introduced in 2016, the Warmate prototype boasts an impressive operating range of 30km and a flight time of approximately 70 minutes. This versatile UAV is capable of carrying various types of warheads, including high explosive (HE), fragmentation (FRAG), and high explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warheads. Measuring 1.2m in length, with a wingspan of 1.6m and a maximum take-off weight of 5.7kg, the Warmate is equipped with an electric motor and propellers, allowing it to reach a cruising speed of 80km/h.
The Warmate 2, a more advanced variant, offers enhanced capabilities with a range of up to 240km and the ability to carry a heavier warhead to target armored vehicles and command posts. This upgraded version also features improved flight control, weather resistance, and night fighting capabilities, making it an invaluable asset on the battlefield.
One of the notable features of the Warmate is its ability to operate as a standalone system, which can be easily transported or carried by road or special forces units. This UAV offers a viable alternative to conventional anti-tank guided missiles, as it can operate over a wider radius, allowing for longer detection and observation of potential targets. Additionally, the system can be equipped with a laser-seeking warhead if required, further enhancing its combat capabilities.
Ukraine and Türkiye Collaborate on Varta 2 4×4 Armored Personnel Carrier
Recently, at the International Defense Industry Exhibition (MSPO 2024) in Kielce, Poland, the Ukrainian Armor company unveiled a new armored fighting vehicle called the Varta 2. This innovative vehicle is designed as an armored personnel carrier (APC), building on the experience gained from previous models such as the Varta, Novator, and Kamrat.
The Varta 2 was developed to meet the operational needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, incorporating advanced protection and mobility features suitable for modern combat environments. Weighing 14 tonnes, this vehicle is lighter than its predecessor but offers enhanced protection, with NATO STANAG Level 3 armor making it resistant to kinetic and mine threats.
Powered by a 360-horsepower Cummins ISB 6.7 engine and an Allison 3200SP automatic transmission, the Varta 2 can reach a top speed of 110km/h. The vehicle is equipped with the Sich remote-controlled weapon station, featuring an integrated 30mm automatic cannon and a 7.62mm machine gun. Additionally, the Varta 2 is equipped with a Tucha smoke grenade launcher, further enhancing its combat capabilities.
The development of the Varta 2 has received support from Türkiye, with the chassis currently being produced in the country. This collaboration ensures the quality and operational needs of the Ukrainian forces are met. To further enhance its combat capabilities, the Varta 2 is equipped with a reconnaissance drone with an operating range of up to 30km and the KVERTUS AD KRAKEN electronic warfare system, which helps protect the vehicle from enemy UAVs.
The passive radar systems on the Varta 2 allow it to detect and track targets without active emission, improving the safety of the crew and the efficiency of the vehicle. This advanced armored personnel carrier is poised to make a significant impact on the battlefield, offering a unique combination of protection, mobility, and combat capabilities.
