Red Wings’ Talbot Injured, Leaves Game vs. Canucks
Red wings Goalie Talbot Injured, Leaving Detroit Thin in Net
Detroit, MI - The Detroit red Wings suffered a blow Sunday night as starting goalie Cam Talbot left the game against the Vancouver Canucks with a lower-body injury. The injury occurred in the second period, forcing backup Ville Husso into action in a 5-4 overtime loss for the Red Wings.
Talbot, who had stopped 12 of 14 shots before exiting at 6:38, was replaced by Husso after Red Wings forward Alex DeBrincat tied the game 2-2.
“No report yet, but it was obviously lower body and he had to pull himself from the game, so we’ll get a better feel probably later tonight into tomorrow,” said Coach Derek Lalonde after the game.
The injury adds to Detroit’s goaltending woes.Backup Alex Lyon is already sidelined with a lower-body injury and will miss the red Wings’ upcoming two-game road trip, which begins Tuesday against the Boston Bruins.
“He [Lyon] will not travel with us,” Lalonde confirmed Saturday. “We’re not sure who the second goalie will be yet.”
Talbot, 37, has been a key part of Detroit’s success this season, posting a 6-5-2 record with a 2.73 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage in 15 games.
Husso, recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on Friday, stepped in for Talbot. He made 15 saves against Vancouver but has struggled in his limited NHL action this season, going 0-2-1 with a 4.90 goals-against average and .818 save percentage in three games.
The Red Wings will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Talbot and clarity on Lyon’s status as they head into a crucial stretch of games.
NewsDirect3.com Exclusive Interview: Red Wings Goaltending in Crisis
We spoke with longtime NHL analyst and goaltending expert,Kevin O’Connell,to get his take on the Detroit Red Wings’ goaltending situation following Cam Talbot‘s injury.
NewsDirector3: Kevin, how serious do you think Talbot’s injury is, and what impact could it have on the Red Wings?
Kevin O’Connell: It’s too early to tell the severity of Talbot’s injury.”Lower-body” is a broad term.It could be anything from a minor tweak that keeps him out a week to something more significant. losing Talbot for any length of time is a major blow for Detroit. He’s been their rock this season, playing at a high level.
NewsDirector3: The Red Wings are already without Alex lyon. What are their options in net?
Kevin O’Connell: Their options are thin. Ville Husso has struggled at the NHL level this year, and he’s their only healthy backup.Detroit might be forced to call up another goalie from Grand Rapids, but they don’t have a lot of experienced options in the minors.
NewsDirector3: Can the Red Wings remain competitive without Talbot?
Kevin O’Connell: It’s going to be tough. Nik Kronwall has held this team together, but they’ll need contributions from everyone to compensate for a weakened goaltending tandem. How Husso performs will be crucial. This is a big possibility for him to prove he can handle the pressure of being a starting NHL goalie.
NewsDirector3: What should Red Wings fans be watching for in the coming days?
Kevin O’Connell:
Fans will be anxiously awaiting news on Talbot’s status. The Red Wings need to know how long they’ll be without him. The team’s performance in their upcoming road games will also be telling. Can they get points without their starting goalie? It will be a test of their depth and resilience.
