Reddit Sues Anthropic Over AI Training Data

Reddit has filed a lawsuit against Anthropic in U.S. District Court in Northern California, ⁤alleging the AI startup used Reddit’s‍ data too train its AI models without a proper licensing agreement. The complaint, filed Wednesday, ‌claims ⁣Anthropic violated Reddit’s user agreement thru unlawful ‌and unauthorized commercial use of its ​content.

The lawsuit marks the first instance of a major tech company legally⁣ challenging an AI model provider regarding its data training practices. Several publishers and content creators have launched similar suits ⁢against tech giants.

Other entities, including The New York Times, have sued OpenAI ⁣and ‍Microsoft, claiming their articles were used without permission ⁢or payment.Authors, including Sarah ⁣silverman, have also sued Meta, alleging their books were used to train AI models without consent.Similar claims have been ⁢brought against AI audio,video,and ‍image generation startups ⁤by music publishers and ​artists.

Reddit‍ has existing agreements with OpenAI and⁤ Google, allowing them to train AI models on Reddit data and feature Reddit posts in their AI chatbot responses. Reddit⁤ maintains that these agreements include⁤ terms protecting user⁢ interests and privacy.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman holds an 8.7% stake in⁣ Reddit,‍ making him⁢ the third-largest shareholder.He previously served on Reddit’s board.

According to the complaint, Reddit contacted Anthropic to inform them that they were not authorized to scrape or use Reddit’s content. Reddit alleges that Anthropic “refused to engage.”

Anthropic did not instantly respond to a request for comment.

Reddit ⁢claims Anthropic’s scraper bots ignored⁣ the social network’s robots.txt files. The company further alleges that Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude, frequently references Reddit communities and topics, indicating ⁤training on Reddit data.

Reddit ‍seeks compensatory damages and‌ restitution for Anthropic’s ‍enrichment through the alleged scraping. The company also requests an injunction to prevent⁤ Anthropic from further use of Reddit’s content.

‌ “We will not tolerate profit-seeking entities like Anthropic commercially⁣ exploiting Reddit content for⁢ billions of dollars without any return for redditors or​ respect for their privacy,” said Ben Lee, Reddit’s ​chief legal officer.
