Cincinnati, OH – The Cincinnati Reds have designated right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras for assignment, making room on the 40-man roster for newly acquired infielder Gavin Lux. The move comes just weeks after the Reds claimed Contreras off waivers from the Texas Rangers.Contreras, 25, has been on a whirlwind journey through the waiver wire in recent months. after being claimed by the Rangers from the los Angeles Angels in December, he now faces waivers once again.Once a highly touted pitching prospect, Contreras was a key piece in the trade that sent jameson Taillon from the Pittsburgh Pirates to the New york Yankees in 2021. He enjoyed a promising debut season wiht the Pirates in 2022, posting a respectable 3.79 ERA over 95 innings. However, his performance has declined substantially in the past two seasons.

In 2023, Contreras struggled to a 7.00 ERA across 68 1/3 innings with the Pirates. After exhausting his minor league options, he began the 2024 season in the Pirates’ bullpen before being designated for assignment and subsequently traded to the Angels for cash.

Contreras finished the 2024 season with the Angels, primarily in a long relief role, posting a 4.33 ERA with subpar peripherals in 37 appearances.

since the start of the 2023 season, Contreras has compiled a 5.47 ERA over 136 2/3 innings. His strikeout and walk rates are below league average, and he has struggled to keep the ball in the park, allowing 1.4 home runs per nine innings.

Despite his recent struggles, Contreras’s potential as a depth arm remains intriguing to some teams. He possesses a fastball that sits around 95 mph and throws six different pitches, offering a diverse arsenal.

It remains to be seen whether Contreras will clear waivers and be assigned to the minor leagues or if another team will take a chance on the former top prospect.

Jake: It’s been a wild few months for Contreras. Remember the Jameson Taillon trade back in 2021? Contreras was one of the main pieces going to the Yankees. He looked really good in his first year with the Pirates, but things haven’t gone so well since then.

Jake: That’s the big question. He’s still young and has a lot of potential, but he needs to figure things out. Maybe a change of scenery will do him good.

Can Former Top Prospect Roansy Contreras Find His Groove After Another DFA?

Cincinnati Reds Designate Right-hander for Assignment, Marking Second time in Weeks

Roansy contreras, once a highly touted pitching prospect, finds himself at a crossroads after being designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds. This marks the second time in just a few weeks that Contreras has been DFA’d, raising questions about his future in Major League Baseball.

Contreras, who was acquired by the Reds just weeks ago after being claimed off waivers from the Texas Rangers, was DFA’d to make room for the arrival of infielder Gavin Lux. The move highlights the competitive nature of roster construction and the pressure on young players to perform.

Contreras’s journey has been a rollercoaster ride. After a promising debut season with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, his performance took a notable dip last year, with his ERA ballooning to 7.00. This season began with a stint in the bullpen before the Pirates designated him for assignment, ultimately leading to his brief tenure with the Rangers and now the Reds.

The young right-hander possesses a powerful fastball that consistently sits around 95 mph and a diverse six-pitch arsenal. However, his recent struggles can be attributed to a loss of command, resulting in decreased strikeout rates, increased walks, and a concerning number of home runs allowed.

Despite the setbacks, Contreras’s raw talent and potential remain intriguing. He could be an attractive reclamation project for another team willing to invest in his development. However, time is of the essence for Contreras to rediscover his form and prove he can consistently perform at the Major League level.

Reds Designate Contreras, Make Room for Lux: A Conversation with a Clubhouse Source

Roansy contreras

Cincinnati, OH – The Cincinnati Reds made a roster move this week that sent ripples through the clubhouse: designating right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras for assignment. This move clears space for the newly acquired infielder Gavin Lux, adding a much-needed spark to the lineup. But what does this mean for Contreras,a pitcher who was once a highly touted prospect?

To gain a deeper understanding of the situation,we sat down with a Reds clubhouse source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

” Contreras showed flashes of brilliance, you know? His fastball can be electric, and he has the makings of a really good pitcher. But consistency has been the issue. He’s struggled to find his groove over the past two seasons, and it seemed like the front office wanted to go in a different direction.”

The source went on to explain that while Contreras’s recent performance with the Angels wasn’t disastrous, it wasn’t impressive enough to warrant keeping him on the 40-man roster, especially with Lux becoming available.

“Lux is a difference-maker,” said the source. “He brings experience, bat control, and a whole lot of energy. He’s exactly the kind of player who can definitely help us take the next step.”

The future for Contreras remains uncertain. He’ll now be placed on waivers, giving othre teams the opportunity to claim him.If he clears waivers, he could potentially be sent to the minor leagues.

The Reds’ decision highlights the difficult choices teams face when building a competitive roster. while parting ways with Contreras is undoubtedly tough, the arrival of Lux signals the organization’s commitment to immediate enhancement.
