Competition Context
Whitley’s victory occurred during the second day of the meet. According to the official order of events, the men’s 100 breaststroke was the eighth event scheduled for Friday, May 1, following the women’s 100 breaststroke.

The win marks a successful transition into Masters swimming for Whitley, who previously competed at the collegiate level for the University of California, Berkeley. During his time with the California Golden Bears, Whitley was a key contributor to the team’s success, helping the program capture three NCAA crowns in five years before retiring from collegiate swimming in June 2023.
Whitley has a long history of high-level performance in the 100 breaststroke. Throughout his earlier career, he established himself as one of the fastest swimmers in the event, including a period where he held the national high school record and achieved a time of 50.8 seconds in the 100 breaststroke, which at the time ranked him among the ten fastest men ever in the event.
