St George Illawarra Dragons rookie halfback Kade Reed made his National Rugby League debut on Anzac Day 2026, starting at No.7 in the club’s clash against the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium.
The 20-year-old Wests Illawarra junior was named in the starting side by interim Dragons coach Dean Young just days after Young took over following the sacking of Shane Flanagan on Monday, April 21, 2026.
Reed’s selection came as part of Young’s first major decision as coach, replacing Kyle Flanagan in the halves and naming the veteran on the bench in jersey No.18.
Young visited Reed’s home to personally inform the rookie and his parents of the selection, emphasizing his belief in the young halfback’s potential and long-term future with the club.
“I got told by Tim and Andrew last night around 5.30pm that I’m going to be head coach for the remainder of the season,” Young said. “From there, I went home to tell my wife to buckle up. I apologised to my three kids about what’s going to happen next, and then I got into the car and drove over to Kade Reed’s house and told him that he’s about to make his debut.”
Reed, a former Illawarra Cutters ballboy, had been identified as a future star after strong performances in the Pre-season Challenge against the Newcastle Knights and consistent form in the NSW Cup.
