VENCE,France (2025-05-04) – As summer approaches, animal shelters in ⁣the Alpes-maritimes region of France are bracing⁤ for the annual influx of abandoned pets. Shelters are also reporting an increase in animal mistreatment cases, highlighting the‍ ongoing challenges faced by animal welfare organizations.

The Story ⁤of Chérif: A Victim of Animal cruelty

One recent case that has sparked outrage is that of Chérif, a hunting dog found severely injured near Col de Vence in January. The dog, emaciated and weak, was discovered wandering the ⁤road, stopping cars in⁢ search of assistance.⁢ Authorities ⁢resolute ⁣Chérif had been shot at close range with a shotgun.

A ⁤passing motorist rescued Chérif‍ and transported him to the Vence refuge. “We tried to save him,” said Fatima, of the SPACA (Livestage Protection Animaux Côte d’Azur) animal rescue institution.

We treated it, we kept it for 15 days with us with back and forth with the veterinarian. He finally died.

King’s Case Heads to Court

Another animal mistreatment case, involving a dog named King, is headed to court. Details of⁢ the mistreatment were not disclosed.

“People no longer hesitate to denounce those who indulge in ⁤reprehensible acts ⁢vis-à-vis the animals,” Fatima said.

Abandonment Remains a Major Problem

Animal⁣ abandonment‍ continues‍ to strain resources. According to Fatima, ⁢the shelter is often threatened with abandonment.

Of the 63 dogs currently housed at the Vence refuge, many are victims of mistreatment. While abandonment is the more common issue, shelters struggle to accommodate all the animals ⁤in need. ⁤”We have a lot of people who bring us their dog ⁣by saying that they can ⁣no longer, that they are tired,” fatima explained.

One such case involved a dog named Zora. According to fatima, ⁢Zora’s owner, despite having kept the dog’s health records up ⁢to date, demanded the refuge take the ‍animal, threatening abandonment if they refused.

Justice System Steps In

The justice⁣ system also plays a role, entrusting⁢ animals to the ⁢Vence structure. Recently, the refuge took in several morbidly obese dachshunds⁤ who had been confined indoors. The owner will face legal ‍consequences, and the refuge is working to rehabilitate‍ the dogs.

While summer typically sees a surge in abandonments, Fatima notes, “Unfortunately, it is now all year round that we have⁢ abandonments.”

In⁤ 2023, the SPA (Protective Society of Animals) reported collecting just over 40,000 abandoned ‍or mistreated animals across France.
