A new governing coalition consisting of the Social Democrats, the Center Party, the Green Party, the Christian Democrats, and the Liberals has formed in Region Stockholm, omni.se reported on October 22, 2026. The political agreement excludes the Left Party, drawing praise from Center Party officials who position the regional pact as a blueprint for national governance.

Center Party Hails Stockholm Pact as National Blueprint

Center Party secretary Hannes Hervieu told Aftonbladet that the Stockholm coalition serves as a clear example of the middle-governance model his party wants to see established at the national level. Hervieu criticized the Left Party for generating political turbulence during negotiations. He argued that while the Center Party has shifted positions and shown openness to various governing alternatives, the Left Party still refuses to discuss societal problems without guaranteed cabinet posts.

Expressen contributor Linn Svansbo, identifying as a left-leaning Social Democrat, wrote in an open letter that the Center Party’s strict parliamentary blockade against the Left Party had successfully spread to Region Stockholm. Svansbo noted that while many within the labor movement understand the Left Party’s frustration over being sidelined, the parliamentary math in the region and the national parliament requires building broad coalitions.

Bitter Divisions Emerge Among Right-Leaning Parties

Aftonbladet reported that the regional coalition triggered internal friction among the traditional right-wing opposition parties that campaigned together on a platform for change. Christian Democrats leader Ebba Busch and Liberal representative Simona Mohamsson both used the Social Democrat-led Region Stockholm as a campaign target ahead of the vote, only for their respective regional parties to enter into coalition with the Social Democrats.

Christian Democrat and Liberal sources defended the move by pointing the finger at the Moderates, claiming that Moderate leaders closed the door on cooperation by ruling out the Green Party early on. A Moderate representative dismissed the criticism as unrealistic, stating that any non-socialist shift would have required support from the Sweden Democrats, making a Center Party agreement impossible without that alignment.

Broader Political Stakes for the Riksdag

The rigid lines drawn between political parties in the national parliament threaten to drag out government formation through the autumn and winter months, with the ultimate risk of snap elections, omni.se reported. Observers note that the regional alliance in Stockholm demonstrates how pragmatic compromises across traditional blocs can alter local governance even as national negotiations remain deadlocked over party exclusions.

Regional Reactions and Campaign Criticisms

Simona Mohamsson campaigned alongside regional Moderate leader Axel Conradi, questioning the record of the Social Democrat-led administration. Axel Conradi argued that the regional Christian Democrats and Liberals failed to uphold national bourgeois policies, stating that they will not achieve their political goals when holding views diametrically opposed to the Social Democrats and the Green Party. Conradi further noted that these actions place Mohamsson and Busch in a peculiar position after offering clear support for a new political direction only to enter a completely different arrangement, which risks confusing voters.

Unnamed sources within the Christian Democrats and Liberals criticized the Moderates, with a Liberal source stating, Det är ju bara löjligt hur de håller på. Responding to the criticism, the Moderates stated in writing that they generally avoid commenting on anonymous sources, particularly those unable to count to 75, noting that a shift in power would have required support from the Sweden Democrats and that the Center Party ultimately turned down a concrete offer.

Linn Svansbo urged the Left Party to examine the actual policies negotiated rather than posting on Facebook about power-hungry Social Democrats, while cautioning them against supporting Moderate tax cuts or Moderate regional board chairs.
