REIMS, France – After a series of postponements, teh access ramp to the A344 motorway from Reims-Center toward Cormontreuil and Châlons reopened Thursday afternoon, April 24. Together, a lane of the same exit, coming from Tinqueux and Paris, which had been closed since Feb. 3, was also reopened to traffic.
The closure was related to the construction of a roundabout at the interchange. According to Reims Mayor Arnaud Robinet,the roundabout is intended to improve access to Tinqueux and the Courlancy district via the rue des Bons Patients. During a site visit Thursday, Robinet stated, “This project must facilitate access to the other side of the canal, following the erasure of the de-Gaulle bridge. I think that this outing will be more borrowed than the old bridge, because it will be easier to access when you come from the highway and to avoid the city center.”
Next Phase of Roundabout Construction to Begin in June
However, only half of the roundabout was completed during this initial phase. Construction on the remaining half is scheduled to begin monday, june 2. At that time, the reims-center exit from Tinqueux/Paris will be rerouted onto a temporary road leading to the rue des Bons Palades in the new Rives de Vesle district.
The exit is then scheduled for a complete closure beginning July 7 to allow for the completion of the construction site. Officials anticipate the roundabout will be fully operational by the end of August, prior to the start of the school year.
