Reliability Showdown: Toyota Takes on Golf and 308 in a 3-Car Comparison Test Drive – The Verdict May Surprise You

Reliability Showdown: Toyota Takes on Golf and 308 in a 3-Car Comparison Test Drive – The Verdict May Surprise You

September 21, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

Ergonomics hold the 308 back

The other two are great, but each has small weaknesses. The 308’s steering wheel is small and out of round, making it hard to know how far to turn it, and it doesn’t give much feedback to your palm.

The Golf’s brake pedal response is sensitive and unstable. Instead, adaptive dampers can be installed in the UK for 720 pounds (about 140,000 yen). Softer dampers provide a finer feel, while harder dampers provide a firmer ride.

The range of dynamic characteristics is wide, but perhaps surprisingly it doesn’t feel any better than the Corolla Sport.

They each have their pros and cons, but they all share the same pleasing handling, excellent fuel economy and praise for their comfort – all of which is reasonably priced at just under £35,000 in the UK.

It’s hard to pick a clear winner, but there are slight differences. The 308 suffers from poor interior ergonomics. It’s not as natural to drive as the other two, and its UK price is on the higher side of the pack.

The Golf’s luxurious and mature interior design is a favorite, and the combination of adaptive dampers and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission makes driving fun in a variety of situations.

Corolla Sports blends in naturally

In this comparison, the Corolla Sport is the easiest family hatchback to drive and feels natural to drive. It has the best fuel economy and its adaptive cruise control works well.

In the UK, the cheapest Golf costs less than the cheapest Corolla Sport, but the most expensive Golf costs more than the most expensive Corolla Sport.

Even though the prices are comparable, Toyota has a strong weapon. Its reliability is unmatched. I know of cases where the touch monitor of the Golf had problems even after the update. This time, too, there were unstable moments when the engine started.

I think the 8.5th generation Golf is a model that brings back the original Volkswagen look. You’ll probably have a hard time deciding which one to choose in the showroom. However, I think the Corolla Sport is the one that most people will realize after a few years that it was the right choice.
