While severe asthma frequently enough requires ongoing, preventative medication, many children experience mild symptoms that are typically managed with a SABA inhaler – often referred to as a “rescue inhaler” – used as needed during flare-ups. Though, frequent SABA use has been linked to poorer outcomes and potential safety concerns.
The Study’s Findings
Researchers conducted a randomized, controlled trial involving over 400 children aged 5 to 11 with mild, intermittent asthma. Participants were divided into two groups: one receiving a combination inhaler (budesonide/formoterol) for daily use, and the other receiving albuterol – a common SABA – as needed. the study tracked asthma control, rescue inhaler use, and exacerbations over a 24-week period.
The results demonstrated a clear benefit for the combination inhaler group.Children using the budesonide/formoterol inhaler experienced fewer asthma exacerbations requiring oral corticosteroids, and significantly reduced thier reliance on albuterol rescue inhalers. Specifically, the combination inhaler reduced exacerbations by approximately 30% compared to albuterol alone. This translates to fewer emergency room visits and improved quality of life for both children and their families.
Why Combination inhalers Work
The effectiveness of combination inhalers lies in their dual action. SABAs like albuterol provide speedy relief by relaxing the muscles around the airways,opening them up for easier breathing. However, they don’t address the underlying inflammation that drives asthma symptoms. ICS, on the other hand, reduce inflammation in the airways, preventing symptoms from developing in the first place.
By combining both medications, the inhaler tackles both the immediate symptoms and the long-term inflammation, leading to better overall asthma control.
