Reliving the Golden Age of Nokia: A Journey Through the Nokia Design Archive

Before the iPhone revolutionized the mobile world, there was Nokia. For decades, the Finnish tech giant dominated the mobile phone industry, its devices becoming cultural icons that shaped how we connected. Now, Aalto University has unveiled the Nokia Design Archive, a treasure trove of materials that offers a fascinating look into the company’s heyday. This free online portal features over 20,000 items, including sketches, photographs, presentations, and interviews, spanning Nokia’s golden era in the 1990s and 2000s.

“In the 1990s and 2000s, millions of people worldwide bought their first mobile phone,” explains Aalto University. “These devices weren’t smart. We couldn’t take photos, share content, or instantly answer questions. But for the first time, ordinary people could chat on the go, send a text, or play Snake. The impact on our lifestyles was transformative.”

The archive, which includes 959 gigabytes of files, many of them previously unpublished, provides a rare glimpse into the creative and professional processes behind Nokia’s groundbreaking designs. “The archives remind us that technologies aren’t born magically,” says Professor Guy Julier, whose research focuses on the global societal impact of design. “They are explored, envisioned, prototyped, and tested through an immense professional effort. Today, we don’t see enough creative exploration like Nokia’s, or discussions that truly consider people’s needs and concerns rather than the interests of businesses or governments.”

From the iconic Nokia 3310, celebrated for its ruggedness, long battery life, and the addictive game Snake, to the Nokia 8110, immortalized as the “banana phone” in The Matrix, the archive highlights Nokia’s most memorable devices. It also revisits lesser-known models like the Nokia N-Gage, a precursor to gaming smartphones, and the Nokia E61, a response to BlackBerry’s dominance.

These archives arrive at a pivotal moment in mobile technology. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative formats like foldable and rollable devices is reshaping the industry, much like the iPhone did in 2007. Nokia’s decline began with its slow response to the smartphone revolution. The company’s attempt to adopt Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform with the Lumia series proved costly, accelerating its fall from grace.

Today, Nokia has reinvented itself. After selling its mobile division to Microsoft in 2014, the company shifted its focus to telecommunications infrastructure, becoming one of the world’s leading network equipment providers. Meanwhile, its mobile legacy lives on through HMD Global, a Finnish company founded by former Nokia executives. HMD has revived classic models like the Nokia 3310, which returned as a smartphone in 2023, blending nostalgia with modern technology.

The Nokia Design Archive is more than a trip down memory lane; it’s a testament to the ingenuity that once defined the mobile industry and a reminder of how far we’ve come.

They were groundbreaking in their ⁤simplicity,⁣ durability, and accessibility. Nokia ⁢phones became synonymous with reliability, innovation, and design excellence, embedding themselves into the fabric ⁢of everyday ‌life.”
