Remains of Missing Climber Found on Swiss Glacier After 30 Years
Decades-Old Mystery Solved on Ober Gabelhorn
The remains of a Swiss citizen, missing since November 4,1994,were discovered on the Ober Gabelhorn glacier in the Wallis region of Switzerland on October 15,2024. Cantonal police confirmed the identification, bringing closure to a nearly 30-year-old disappearance. This finding resolves the case of two climbers who vanished in the area in 1994; the remains of the first climber were found in 2000.
The Ober Gabelhorn, standing at 4,063 meters (13,327 feet), is a challenging peak popular among experienced mountaineers. Its treacherous conditions have, unfortunately, contributed to several long-unresolved disappearances.
Glacial Discoveries Increasingly Common
The melting of Swiss glaciers, accelerated by climate change, is revealing remains and artifacts previously locked in the ice. Similar discoveries have been made in recent years, highlighting the impact of glacial retreat.
In 2022,two human skeletons were found on glaciers within the Wallis region. In July 2017, the Tsanfleuron glacier yielded the bodies of a couple who had been missing since 1942. Further back, in June 2012, the Aletsch glacier revealed the remains of three brothers who died in 1926.
