The Solidarity Trial: A Global Effort

In August 2021, the WHO announced that the Solidarity trial had entered a new phase, evaluating three additional candidate drugs: artesunate, infliximab, and imatinib. These drugs were selected by an independent panel of experts based on their potential to reduce mortality. The manufacturers – Ipca, Johnson and Johnson, and Novartis – agreed to support access to the drugs at reasonable prices should they prove effective, through Letters of Agreement with the WHO.

Remdesivir: A Closer Look

Remdesivir, an antiviral medication, received initial approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of COVID-19. The Solidarity trial continued to assess its effectiveness, and meta-analyses of mortality data from all relevant trials were conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of its impact.

The final results of the Solidarity trial, along with these meta-analyses, aimed to provide conclusive evidence regarding the effectiveness of remdesivir and other repurposed drugs. The findings contribute to a growing body of knowledge surrounding COVID-19 treatment strategies.

The Solidarity PLUS Trial

Building on the foundation of the original Solidarity trial, the WHO launched the Solidarity PLUS trial. This trial expands the scope of investigation to include artesunate, infliximab, and imatinib, in addition to the local standard of care.
