Remembering Albertina Kerr: A Teen’s Journey Through Youth Psychiatric Care

Remembering Albertina Kerr: A Teen’s Journey Through Youth Psychiatric Care

November 20, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

Mica Dorfman’s Experience at Albertina Kerr

Mica Dorfman spent two-and-a-half weeks at Albertina Kerr’s youth psychiatric care unit when she was 12 years old. Now 16, she vividly remembers her daily routine. Breakfast and morning medications started her day, followed by school sessions, skill groups, lunch, and free time. Evenings included dinner and bedtime preparations.

She recalls the simple moments that stood out during her stay. G-rated Netflix shows played at breakfast, and staff offered small comforts like tea and nightlights. One special memory is a stuffed dog named Albert, gifted to her in an Easter basket. “For the past three years, there hasn’t been a night where he doesn’t sleep next to me,” she shared.

Dinner time was a highlight. Dorfman and a small group of kids would sit on the floor, sharing jokes and stories. She found this environment comforting, especially during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Being with other people and talking was something that I really needed,” she said.

Albertina Kerr has served Portland for over a century, providing mental health services and group homes for individuals with disabilities. The organization aims to empower youth to lead self-determined lives. With an annual budget of $52 million, Albertina Kerr maintains a focus on youth support, employing 734 staff members.

Dorfman’s stay helped her gain important skills. She participated in programs upon her return, including exposure therapy at the Portland Anxiety Clinic. Journaling became a valuable tool for her. She filled a notebook with art and reflections, tracking her habits and emotions.

She noted a significant change during her time at Albertina Kerr. Initially frustrated about being there, she later found comfort and safety in the unit. “The first day, my frustration was having to go to Albertina Kerr. But then the last day, my frustration was finding out that I had to go home because I had felt so safe there,” she remembered.
