Obituary: Con Gilsenan, RIP
Fr Phil Gaffney described Con Gilsenan as “a man of decency and integrity who touched the lives of so many people” during his funeral at the Cathedral of the Christ the King.
Con Gilsenan operated the Dominick Street pub Con’s for nearly 40 years and founded a funeral home. He passed away peacefully at his home in Mullingar on November 20, 2024, after a prolonged illness, showing dignity and strength throughout.
Large crowds attended his removal and funeral service, reflecting the high regard in which he was held. Fr Gaffney noted that Con would be pleased to see so many friends and colleagues gathered in the cathedral he cherished.
The priests of Mullingar will miss Con’s presence during services, particularly when he assisted in bringing in the remains of parishioners with dignity and respect. A native of “The Float,” Multyfarnham, Con took pride in calling Mullingar home, valuing openness and belonging in his community.
Fr Gaffney emphasized that Con’s faith sustained him, paired with the support he received from the community through numerous get-well cards during his illness. He highlighted Con’s kindness, wit, intelligence, and integrity, noting that he would be missed by all who knew him.
Tributes poured in, including one from Revd Canon Alastair Graham, who expressed sadness at Con’s passing. He praised Con’s humanity, compassion, and dedication to helping others, stating that every task Con took on showed his commitment to those around him.
Con’s enthusiasm for sports and his sensitive support for bereaved families were also acknowledged. His funeral director services were highly regarded, providing comfort to many families.
Fr Graham noted that Con’s faith inspired others, stating that he would be welcomed with open arms in the afterlife. He offered heartfelt condolences to Con’s wife Joan, son Conor, and extended family, highlighting the deep love Con had for them.
Con is survived by his wife Joan, son Conor, daughter-in-law Megan, siblings, and a wide circle of friends. Following requiem Mass, he was interred at Whitehall Cemetery.
