Remembering Peadar Togher: Belmullet Mourns Young Man Lost in New Zealand Tragedy

Irish Community Mourns Loss of Young Man in New zealand Tragedy

Belmullet, Ireland – A pall of grief has fallen over the close-knit community of belmullet, county Mayo, as news spreads of the tragic passing of 24-year-old Peadar Togher in Hamilton, New Zealand. The young man, known for his kind heart and gentle spirit, died in an accident on December 14th, 2024, leaving behind a heartbroken family and a community struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.

Peadar, son of Patrick and Margaret Togher, was a beloved brother to John, Michael, and Padraig. He will be deeply missed by his immediate family, as well as his sister-in-law Emily, nephew cillian, niece Nora, and a wide circle of extended family, friends, and neighbors.

“Peadar was a truly special young man,” said a close family friend.”He had a smile that could light up a room and a heart of gold. he will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.”

The Togher family is receiving condolences at McDonnell’s Funeral Home in Belmullet on Monday evening from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at St. brendan’s Church in Tirrane on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m., followed by burial in Emlybeg cemetery.

Recognizing the widespread impact of Peadar’s loss, the family has arranged for a live stream of the funeral Mass on McDonnell Funeral Directors’ Facebook page on wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. A recording of all funeral services will also be available for viewing on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

The family has requested privacy at their home on Wednesday morning.

“Did you hear about the terrible news from New Zealand?” asked Aoife, her voice heavy with sadness. “A young man from Belmullet passed away over there.”
