Remitly Global has launched a money transfer service directly within OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform, marking the first integration of cross-border payments into the conversational AI interface. The feature, announced earlier this month, allows users to initiate international remittances through natural language prompts without leaving the chat environment. This development represents a significant step in embedding financial services into generative AI tools, potentially reshaping how consumers interact with banking and payment systems.

The integration enables Remitly customers to send money to over 170 countries by typing requests such as “Send $200 to my mother in Manila” or “Transfer 500 euros to my sibling in Lagos.” ChatGPT interprets the intent, confirms details like amount, destination, and recipient, and then routes the transaction through Remitly’s secure backend. Users must authenticate via their existing Remitly account, which is linked through OAuth-style authorization within the chat interface. No financial data is shared with OpenAI. all sensitive information remains under Remitly’s control, according to the company’s technical documentation.

Remitly positions the launch as part of its broader strategy to reduce friction in cross-border payments by meeting users where they already spend time — increasingly, in AI-powered conversational environments. The company cites internal data showing that over 60% of its customer service inquiries begin with simple, repetitive requests that could be handled through automation. By enabling transactions directly in ChatGPT, Remitly aims to streamline the user experience while maintaining compliance with know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) regulations.

Industry analysts note that this move reflects a growing trend of financial institutions experimenting with generative AI as a distribution channel. While banks and fintechs have previously deployed AI chatbots for customer service or fraud detection, few have enabled actual transaction initiation within third-party AI platforms. Remitly’s implementation is distinct in that it leverages ChatGPT’s language understanding to trigger real-world financial actions, rather than merely providing information or support.

Security and privacy safeguards are central to the design. Remitly confirms that the integration uses encrypted tokens for session authentication and does not store conversation logs on OpenAI’s servers. Transaction confirmation occurs within Remitly’s PCI-DSS compliant environment, and users receive standard email and in-app receipts as with any other Remitly transfer. The company states that no personal data is used to train AI models, and users can disable the feature at any time through their account settings.

The launch comes amid increasing scrutiny of how AI platforms handle financial interactions. Regulators in the U.S. And European Union have begun examining whether AI-driven financial services fall under existing consumer protection frameworks. Remitly says it has engaged with legal advisors to ensure the ChatGPT integration complies with Regulation E in the United States and the Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) in Europe, particularly regarding transaction transparency and dispute resolution rights.

Remitly’s move may influence other players in the remittance and digital wallet space to explore similar integrations. Competitors such as Wise, PayPal, and Western Union have not yet announced comparable features within ChatGPT or other large language models. However, several have indicated in public filings that they are evaluating AI-driven interfaces for customer engagement and service delivery.

For now, the ChatGPT money transfer feature is available to Remitly users in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Economic Area, with plans to expand to additional regions later in 2026. Access requires the latest version of the ChatGPT app or web interface and an active Remitly account. The company has not disclosed usage metrics since launch but says early adoption has been strongest among users sending recurring payments to family members in the Philippines, Mexico, and India.
