MODICA, Italy – An exhibition dedicated to the life and work of renowned Sicilian artist Renato Guttuso has opened at the Mutual Aid Society in Modica. Titled “I, Renato Guttuso,” the exhibition, curated by giuliana Fiori and Anna Papale, runs from April 19 to Oct. 19, 2025.
The exhibition aims to showcase Guttuso’s multifaceted personality, delving into his artistic, intellectual, and political dimensions through a curated selection of his works, including oils and drawings. Organizers say the exhibition will reveal both public and private aspects of the artist’s life.
This is the second iteration of the exhibition, which first appeared in Noto in 2020. Sikarte, a Sicilian cultural association, organized the project to connect unique locations with historical and contemporary artists, aiming to enhance public access to the island’s cultural treasures through art exhibitions.
Graziana Papale, president of Sikarte, emphasized the association’s commitment to making art accessible and engaging to a broad audience. “The exhibition ‘I, Renato Guttuso’ intends to celebrate the great Sicilian artist, revealing his passions and his soul, without neglecting his political and artistic commitment,” Papale said.
Exhibition Highlights Guttuso’s “soul”
The exhibition traces Guttuso’s creative and personal journey, from his Sicilian roots to his time in Rome, exploring themes of love, eros, and the muses that inspired him. It also examines his political activism and the social values reflected in his still lifes and historical canvases, which depict struggles for social equality. The exhibition further includes a collection of Guttuso’s set design work for the theater, including sketches of stage costumes from the 1950s.
Anna Papale, co-curator of the exhibition, said it seeks to document Guttuso’s artistic journey and social commitment, highlighting his energetic and expressive style. “At the same time, however, it proposes itself as a means to tell Renato Guttuso in his intimate everyday life, a way to retrace the emotional, intense and passionate process, which he transfuses with full hands in his creative adventure,” she said.
Location Adds Context
The Mutual Aid Society of Mutual Aid,located in the Palazzo della Cultura di Modica, provides a fitting backdrop for the exhibition. The 17th-century building, formerly a Benedictine monastery, reflects the social, political, and ideological themes present in Guttuso’s work. Organizers note the location strengthens the ideological sense of some social issues addressed by the artist.
Giorgio Solarino, president of the Mutual Aid Society of Modica, expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the exhibition. “Hosting an exhibition on Renato Guttuso is an honor for us given the close relationship that is between the social, ideological and political issues faced by us as an entity and by the artist within his research and his works,” Solarino said.
Modica Mayor Maria Monisteri Caschetto called the exhibition a “jewel” for the city, anticipating it would draw thousands of visitors and solidify Modica’s reputation as a cultural destination.

The project is supported by the Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity, the Municipality of Modica, the Sicilian Regional Assembly, and other organizations.
